Well I hope that I could buy E-P3 with the Olympus 45mm f/1.8, but not for over 800 EUR :-\

The 45mm is semi-tempting but it depends on the street pricing when it hits. If the rumours were right then I wont be getting it too soon.

the 45 is tempting, but after a while, at least after I had my fun with the leica and the IR gh1(if it ever gets here)

The 12 is mighty tempting isn't it? The combined MF/AF is an interesting development. Has that ever been done on a lens before?

These two lenses, together with the 20/1.7 that I already have, will let me cover over 90% of my shooting with lenses that are f/2.0 or faster. For longer telephoto I have the old 4/3 40-150, which works OK. I hope there will eventually be a high quality but not too large telezoom that can replace it. For longer tele I think zooms make sense. They're usually not much bigger or slower than primes. For shorter focal lengths I don't intend to buy any zooms though.
Since I got the 20, I only use the kit zoom for wide angle (I have a Nokton 40/1.4 for short tele) and when I get the 12/2.0, I can retire the kit zoom. The Nokton will stay, but won't see much use when I get the 45/1.8.

I will get the 45mm f/1.8 as soon as I can...
I have a 20mm f/1.7 now, and nice portrait lens in a native mount will be really nice to have... I may get a Contax/G adapter 1st, and use my 45mm f/2 Planar until I get the 45mm f/1.8.
anyone need a 320ws 2 light mono-lght set up?  :)

I'm a little disappointed that the 45/1.8 uses only 7 aperture blades. Granted, they employ Oly ZD's circular aperture diaphragm (CAD) design. However, portrait lenses often have as many as 8 or 9 blades to enhance the bokeh effect for sweet hazy backgrounds. If Oly ZD does go through with a 50mm macro later this year, I hope they give it 9 aperture blades to enhance it's secondary portrait lens usage as well.

The 12/2 uses 7 aperture blades too (CAD). I would have preferred 9 blades there too, but it's understandable since that type of lens is rarely used for portraits. One portrait instance for the medium WA 12/2 I have seen is to deliberately elongate the legs of a petite female model. Of course, most portraiture is done with moderate focal length lenses (e.g., ~ 17mm to 50mm), medium teles (100mm), or even super teles (150mm).

Given the formats less shallow depth of field potential, I think most would be using the lens pretty much wide open or close to wide open, where the rounded blades will do their job well for at least a stop or more. The benefit from going higher blade numbers I don't would be real world significant.

That's nice if true, but I prefer to see for myself first. I have used 7-, 8-, and 9-bladed apertures before, and it clearly made a difference.

Were they rounded? And how far were you stopping down? Admittedly I've not paid such close attention, but at or close to wide open I find curved blades hold circular easily. If you stop down a lot, they do degrade but that is less important a use then.

No, they weren't: they were legacy lenses. Oly ZD didn't start using circular aperture diaphragms (CAD) until the digital lenses were designed, and they didn't do CAD right away either. Still, Oly ZD uses 9-blade CAD lenses right now for the 4:3 platform (e.g., 14-35/2, 35-100/2, 90-250/2.8, 50-200/2.8-3.5 SWD, and the 70-300/4-5.6).

The 50/2, 150/2, and 300/2.8 were among the first ZD lenses released and were designed before CAD was implemented. However, I would expect them to be implemented with CAD if their designs were tweaked.

My E-P3 is on its way with the 17mm.  The 45mm f1.8 is tempting since it's so reasonably priced.  What I would rather have is the 14-54mm f2.8-3.5, but it's 4/3 and Olympus confirmed that C-FT will not work with 4/3 lenses.  Hopefully, we get a 14-54mm or more fixed at f2.8 in the near future.

I want the 45mm too, but I'm going to have to wait until a $250 deal comes up.
