Should I swap my Oly 17mm pancake for Pan 20mm
« on: December 20, 2010, 05:13:55 AM »
Guys,

I've been checking out some shots taken with the 20mm f1.7 Panasonic and they look really good in low light. I currently use an Olympus 17mm Pancake lens but the lowest it can go is f2.8.

Would it be wise for me to trade my Olympus for the Panasonic in an attempt to improve my low-level shots?

Thanks,

SirLylos

20mm is a sharper and faster lens than oly 17mm, so yes it would be a forward leap. if you are ok with the slightly narrower field of view.

Thanks Chavez_ding,

I've just put the Olympus 17mm on ebay. I think I can cope without the extra mm ;)

I think he is going to sell the 17mm and pay the extra for a 20mm.

The 20mm Panasonic is fantastic.  Even a pro photographer was well impressed by the sharpness the other day.

There again it should be good given the price.

That's what I did...
Not turning back
The extra almost 2 stops will be breath of fresh air for low light shooters. (f/2.8 to f/1.5 is 2 stops for all practical purposes.. don't need the math geeks to nit pick please)

I had debated between the two myself and finally decided to pony up the extra $$$ for the 20mm and I don't regret it one bit. If you're into available light shots, this lens is a must have.

Good luck. Before I bought mine, I checked high and low for a well priced used Panasonic 20mm on Craigslist, Buy&Sell, ebay.ca, ebay.com...no luck. People are hanging onto them tightly! And amazingly enough, I saw many listings from Japan and other places in Asia asking for far more than what it costs new here--like in the order of $700+ (!!!).

Yeah I figured as much, I'm hoping to sell the Olympus for about £200 as it's practically unused. I then don't mind stumping up the £250 for a new one.

I bit the bullet. It will be my last purchase for 2010. I have read and seen too many good things about this lens.

I forked over around $400 for it last spring, but right now Amazon has it $326.35. I really like it: it gives a sharp, muted rendering and I use it for shooting inside with my E-P1 without flash. Good for street photography too. Goes well with the Olympus VF-1, if you have the E-P1 or happen to like ocular finders.
