Review of Samyang 7.5mm f/3.5 fisheye for MFT
« on: September 12, 2011, 06:28:10 AM »
The Samyang 7.5mm f/3.5 is an interesting little lens for MFT and very affordable.

The English version of this review should be available on LensTip in a couple of days, for those that cannot wait is a translation to English...

"Such things only in the Age, will answer with a sneer."

Oh how I love Google Translate!  ;D

The lens is very interesting too, at half the price of the Panasonic. Distortion seems much more evident with this than the Panasonic--I guess it's by design?

Well nothing worse than a fisheye that doen't provide enough distortion. I thought the level was about right for a rectangular format fisheye.

lenstip calls it the best (most resolved) fisheye theyve ever tested, with sharpness thats on par with the 45mm macro
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

They haven't tested the Panasonic 8mm, though, and while I haven't had hands on experience with the Samyang, I can tell you that my 8mm seems sharper than the image samples I have seen coming out of the Samyang.  (not that the Samyang is bad, especially for the price)

The difference is about three times in Bulgaria. 499 Levs for 7.5 Samyang, against 1500 for 8mm Pany. AND it is available in both Silver and Black. Nice, isn't it?
It's so nice I can't really say why I haven't got it yet.

I wonder if anyone of you got this lens and have some photos taken with it, which I can look at and decide if it fits my expectations.

Thanks in advance!

Hi André,

I haven't seen any photos taken with the Samyang fisheye at this site, but I've seen some at flickr dot com.  Just search "Samyang 7.5mm" at flickr's, and quite a few will show up.

Here's a couple with the lens mounted on MFT cameras, - the last one, however, a pic taken with that lens attached to a Oly E-PL2.  I like both the IQ, as well as that photo, - and
hope the shooter woun't kill me for using his flickr-photo, :-)   (The first photo: I believe that flickr account owner will be just happy, as he seems to use the flickr for advertising purposes, -
just click on the photo to get to the flickr site in question.  Seems the guy has a lot of interesting items, also MFT related, up for sale).

Enjoy your Christmas holidays!

Works well for landscapes, even though you'd think it wouldn't.

Reviving an old thread.

I just picked up this lens. I've been wanting it for quite a while. I was looking for a really wide angle lens, and couldn't afford the 7-14, or even the 9-18, right now.

I'll play with it tomorrow, but the quick test shots I took today look great! I'm very excited about this lens.

There are a few of us who purchased the lens since this thread was started. There is a sample thread here:

I bought the Rokinon version from Amazon. $299 shipped.

OK, a couple of quick shots. I was at work, so couldn't do a whole lot. All except the HDR were hand held. All were shot with my E-PL2, RAW. The Hemi-Defish is an Adobe plugin, which seems to work pretty well. Contrast and sharpness look real good. I just have to get used to not including my fingers in the shots, LOL! Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase and can't wait to do some serious shooting with it.

1. HDR

2. Straight shot, de-fished using Hemi-Defish, watermarks are due to demo version

3.

You don't think? I think there's a pretty big difference between #1 and 2. I don't it's meant to correct all distortion, but it seems to do a fairly good job. There are some images where it really doesn't work at all.

Check out the sample thread:
 http://e-p1.net/lens-sample-photo-archive/samyang-7-5mm-13-5-umc-fish-eye-mft/
There is a sample of a defished image with GIMP, together with the particular setting used for that. It's not perfect, but still better than that watermarked sample here.

As with all photography, different things work for different folks.

I tried Gimp. It does work pretty well. The big problem I've found, and haven't figured out how to correct, is that it ends up cropping the photo, big time. I don't like that. While the software I used in the photo above isn't perfect, it didn't get cropped at all. For me, I'll live with a little curvature to save the whole image, vs straightening the image but losing a significant portion to cropping.

Here's the original:

Here's the Gimp:

And here's the defished one I did earlier:

For me, I can live with the little bit of curvature on the right, and keep the door and archway on both sides.

Use the Zoom slider. And correct the other two, because it trends to become ugly in the corners if you don't.
To be sincere, I was not able to get that particular look with GIMP. Maybe a plugin or a tutorial has to be followed.
