Questioning the 45mm 1.8
« on: October 03, 2011, 10:30:32 AM »
Ok...IMO, I think I'd rather stick with the 57mm Hexanon or just put the $399 towards a 1.2 57mm..

AF doesn't matter too much as I do video primarily and am used to it.  Kind of like the closer focusing of the hexanon.  And as sharp as the 45mm looks, hex has that in spades.

Anything I'm missing to convince me other wise if you have or tried both?  I know they're different focal lengths, but really, only a few footsteps backwards

I think you will find that there is a huge difference in sharpness at full opening. And you will find much less coma and higher contrast at full opening too. Not to mention that the 45/1.8 is so much smaller and lighter. I have the Hexanon 40/1.8 and I can tell you that it's a joke compared to the 45/1.8, at full opening. It's nice from f/2.8 upwards though.

I had the 40mm...it's not the 57mm...at all...full opening is also a stop faster.  The 57 Hex IMO is very sharp at 1.8.  You have to try it.

Everyone loves the 45mm so far...I'd give it a try.

I'll probably get it, but what I really want is a 12-60mm f2.8.

I really don't see the point in getting old MF lenses when there are new AF lenses at decent prices in the same focal length and brightness range. I already have the Nokton 40/1.4 but still bought the m-Zuiko 45/1.8. And I can tell you that the m-Zuiko is sharper and has much less coma at full opening. Plus the AF is really a neccessity for moving subjects like people. Even MF is better on the m-Zuiko since the focus assist kicks in automatically as soon as you turn the focus ring. All the button-pressing to activate focus assist for legacy lenses just takes too much time if the subject is not totally stationary. And even then it's a chore.
Actually, I now have five lenses around 40 mm focal length and this one was still worth getting.
