PEN E-P1 + ZD 35mm Macro, AF really slow
« on: March 02, 2011, 10:41:43 PM »
Hello,

I just signed up to this community.

I tried using the ZD 35mm Macro with a DMW-MA1 adapter on my PEN E-P1 as I love the lens so much.  I wasn't expecting that the E-P1's Contrast Detect AF can drive the lens crazy.  AF is borderline terrible.  Is this normal?  Has anyone tried this setup on their E-P1?

Thank you.

In good light, the lens searches through its entire focus range very frequently.

It doesn't focus at all in outdoors at night time.  I understand that this lens is not compatible with CDAF so that must be the reason.

I really like this lens as an all-around portrait substitute because it did so well on my ex-E420.

You think the Sigma 30mm f1.4 HSM, although not CDAF-compatible, would do well in AF with its HSM mechanism?

Four Thirds lenses don't work very well with the adapter. Yes, they autofocus, but as you've seen, they don't do it very well. This is something that you'll have to deal with unless you want to buy a dedicated Micro Four Thirds lens, or just use manual focus.

I have this combination but with MMF-1 (olympus adapter) and I can say the AF is slow like a kit lens mZuiko 14-42 mm, but more accurate, and I dont have problem to focus in dark (it is slower, but like I say:accurate).
I believe the problem is in adapter. Try Olympus MMF-1 and maybe you see the difference.
And, of course: did you check firmware ?

I have the 35 with MMF-1, yes Very slow...When using this lens I pretty much manual focus all the time now, or maybe pre focus would be a better description, set the lens then move the camera nearer or closer to get the shot.

The reality is there aren't many to choose from.  I just hope we get third party micro-4/3 lenses this year.

You know what, I have the same feeling its the adapter.  But I read from somewhere that the MMF-1 is identical to the DMW-MA1, and the latter is cheaper too.

Yes, I made sure the firmware is the latest.

Did you check the lens too?
