Panasonic Leica 25mm/F1.4 or Voigtländer Nokton 25mm/F0.95
« on: January 13, 2012, 05:28:28 PM »
Hi forum friends!

I have a question once again...

I'm thinking of buying either Panasonic Leica 25mm/0.95 or Voigtländer Nokton 25mm/0.95. For so long I like the Panasonic Leica one better, but hasn't made up my mind totally yet.

Which one does you think I should yearn for?

I've been looking for both on www.lenstip.com but the reviews don't make me decide one of them.

I know you can't do my decisions, but I can get tips from all of you and then sort things out and make the final choice :)

To all of you thanks in advance, 'n' have a nice weekend!
Best wishes to you all!

It depends, the nokton has a full stop more of light gathering, but at the expense of auto focus and a lot of resolution up to f2. The nokton is wonderfully crafted in metal and has a manual aperture and proper DOF scale. Resolution at f2.8-4 is something youve never seen in your life, not even with full frame, its that sharp.  Problem is that you probably dont want it for its capability at f4, you want it because its fast fast fast, so in that case the panasonic is better cause its simply amazingly sharp at f1.4, its even better at f2-2.8. Soooo, decisions decisions...
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

Odd, Photozone did not have a test of the PL 25/1.4, but here is some Voigtlander Nokton stuff:

I have owned the 50mm f/1.1 for my M5, and the build is great, all metal as L said...the 25mm f/.95 is the same FOV of the 50mm version for Leica mount cameras.
BUT, the Panny/Leica F/1.4 Summilux has AF, and, at night, you will love having that option... IQ wise, the P/L may have an edge wide open, IF that is where to use it!

You have a E-P3, so hoping the ISO one stop is no biggie.

I think I most will use aperture around 5,6-8.

Now I found out that Voigtländer is made for 52mm filters, and that makes it more interesting. I've ordered three new 52mm filters this week.

I'll search around for more information about this two lenses. I don't have the money right now anyway.

It's too bad that I live in a small village in northern Sweden, otherwise I would maybe be testing both lenses before I do my decision.

Thanks for tips and links so long :)

Edit: Spelling.

at f5.6-8 they will pretty much be identical in resolution with the leica maybe having a tiny bit better corners but nothing noticeable.
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

The Nokton 25 virtually lives on my EP3,  as Lisandra stated when the lens is stopped down the detail from the files is beyond amazing. It depends on your ability to live with manual focus and if you don't use the VF2 I would question the value of this lens for most users.
The close focus ability is great and it also shines when used for video work. Sometimes I think of selling the Nokton and getting the Panasonic but its unique qualities are worth more to me than just having another good, fast autofocus lens.

tbh, if you're going to use it at f5.6-8 you're not really going to see any difference over the kit lens @25mm...

I spend more time removing sharpness than adding it...

Doesn't it work with VF-2? Will the Panasonic Leica do that?

And maybe I did think wrong. I'll also use other apertures than 5,6-8. I did mix it up with the 9-18 for architecture and landscapes. Sorry.
Best wishes to you all!

Because of the shallow depth of field of this lens at wide open apertures I think having a camera with a viewfinder helps get the best focus from the Nokton. I know many users of the EP3 are able to focus manual lenses without the VF2 but I think it makes it a much more enjoyable experience.

Now I see how you mean.

The good thing is that I have ordered the VF-2 this week, and will hopefully get it next week :)

First I understand it like wouldn't work with the VF-2 'cause it's a lens from a third party company :)

I've also seen it's a difference in price between the two lenses. The Panasonic Leica one is about 240$ cheaper.

With more research done I've found that Olympus has a 25mm for the FourThirds system. That will need and adapter and would maybe be a bit clunky to use in some situations.
Best wishes to you all!

Won't really be any different to the kit lens at those apertures either.  Unless you want to use it wider than F5.6 I'm really not sure you're going to get any benefit out of them...

The whole benefit of having a lens with f/.95 or f/1.4, is to shoot in low light w/o flash (f/2 and larger), and/or with a ND.6 filter in daylight, to use the widest f/stops for very limited DOF in your photo's, when you want it.

Hmm, how do you mean with wider? Is 8 or 4.5 wider than 5.6?

Sorry, but I doesn't understand all the english photo terms, specially when I don't even know all of 'em in swedish :)

Ummm,

OK, f/stops are fractions, so the smaller the denominator, the "Larger OR Wider" is the opening...

f/2 on a 50mm lens (any 50mm lens) = an opening of 25mm --  50mm/2 = 25mm.  f = the focal length, in this case, 50mm, so f/2 is the fraction 50mm/2, or 50 divided by 2

So, the smaller numbers are really "larger" openings.
f/8 = 50mm/8 or 6.25mm opening
f/2.8 = 50mm/2.8 or 17.86mm opening

here is a reference chart showing the same exposure for each f/stop

One of my Blogs. More Here

Now, the "Terms"

  • Wider = Open Up
  • Smaller = Close Down

These are old school for referring to the real opening, not the representative number of the f/stop. So, "Wider" equals a "Larger" opening.
Us old timers tried to make it easy to remember which way to tell others the direction of the f/stop
that makes sense when you look at f/stop as you move it, as you "Open" and "Close" it

Hope this clarifies a bit.

Thanks, M5-User.

I knew the swedish terms of this but not the english :)

I use to see it as the larger aperture, the more of the surface is covered and that doesn't let light pass by.

As long as you understand the f/stop numbering in your terms.. so f/8 has less blocking coverage than f/16.  That works also.

Now the Panasonic Leica 25mm/F1,4 asph is ordered :)

I was too excited when I did fill in the order, so I forgot to order filters, but I've sent them a mail and hope to get answer later today :)
