Panasonic 14mm pancake lens on Pen? Anyone using this?
« on: December 29, 2010, 06:49:25 AM »
Hi

I would be very interested in the Panasonic 14mm f2.5 as a pocketable/walkaround lens on my E-PL1.  It is not unreasonably priced.

Has anyone used this specific lens on an Olympus Pen?  If so did it function correctly, and are there any lens correction issues (i.e. in-camera processing of aberrations), or any other problems?

Thanks
Nigel

Hello, Nigel, and welcome to the forum.
I don't have this lens and I guess it will not get too many users straight away as it is both too expensive ( I see it sells for exactly as much as Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 in my country) and it does not give too much advantage over the kit zoom. I would rather recommend the Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 instead, I see that users are generally very happy with it and it provides a much better low-light shooting advantage.

Or the Olly 17mm pancake, if you don't have one already, which is noticeably more "pocket-able" and less expensive. Although I have to wonder if there's a good after-market lens cap for the 20mm that is lower-profile than the stock one, that cap is thick (like 2x thicker than the Oly cap)!

Thanks for the opinions - but neither a 40mm equivalent (Pan 20/1.7) or 34mm equivalent (Oly 17) interest me.  The 14mm, as a 28mm equivalent, would be ideal as a walkaround city/landscape/stitched panorama lens.  At £280 (best UK price) it's not too expensive, and much more pocketable than the 14-42 kit lens or alternatives.

Perhaps someone here has tried it?  The samples on dpreview (on a GH2) look very good.

I think that there is quite a lot of distortion that is corrected in Panasonic bodies. You can of course correct your photos in PP if they are not corrected in-camera.

A decent evaluation of the lens (in Italian, but Google translate does a halfway-decent job), thanks to 43rumors: http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=it&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http://www.dcfever.com/news/readnews.php%3Fid%3D4702

Seems to me significant vignetting for anything below f/4.0. It's 2mm shorter than the 17mm lens according to the online specs (and if it comes with a similarly-chunky lens cap as the 20mm, it's probably the same depth with the cap on. ;) If you really want pocketable, you might want to check out the "pinwide" lens, although it's more an artsy lens that you wouldn't want to take all your shots with. http://wanderlustcameras.com/products/pinwide.html Although when they'll actually start large-scale production is unclear, hopefully sometime in January (having put my $ in on it and eager to play around with one.)

If you do get the 14mm, I'd be curious to see comparison shots with the 17mm with regards to field of view.

Handheld pinhole photos are hardly possible however.

No, it is corrected in supplied software, or manually in other software. I have a preset for all my wides, By far, the worst is the Original Pentax M 40mm f/2.8 pancake...but my copy is quite sharp compared to the general opinion...The Pany 20mm is much sharper though, having to be used far a senor, not film.

If it can be corrected in the Panasonic G1, Please show me what menu option I need to enable.

The distortion is quite significant but it's already corrected automatically 'in-body' for jpeg files or by pp software when using raw (if I'm reading the dp review correctly):

So the menu option you need to select is jpeg......

I got the panny 14mm today and have only had a chance to take a few test shots with it so far. It is smaller and lighter than the Lumix 20mm and the Oly 17mm. The focus seems noisy to me but it may be that I am spoiled by the super quiet 20mm. It is quick to focus with my E-P2 however. The distortion is as expected when you are up close to the subject but seems minimal at the distances I would normally shoot with this lens. I hope to get a chance to actually try it out this weekend and see how the shots turn out on my monitor.
