Olympus om to ep1 aperature control...
« on: November 24, 2010, 09:42:33 AM »
Hi, I was joust wondering if anybody could help me. I have some old 70s and 80s om lenses I want to use on my ep1. However, I am unsure how adapters 'work'. Obviously I'd have to set the aperature on the lens, and maual focus, but:

How would the aperature on the lens step down without a mechanical 'button' to push the lever on the lens?

AND how would the camera know what aperature I'd set on the lens?

Thanks for any help! Redwine.

Hi Redwine...
I have a couple of OM lenses and they are great performers with my G1...

There is no mechanical or electrical communication whatsoever between the lens and the camera but the incoming light will be measured and exposure set accordingly. I use mine in 'Aperture' priority which gives me enough control to influence the speed (through the ISO and EV controls for instance) You need to manually turn the aperture ring on the lens to set it.

Best thing to do is mount the lens, set it to AP, and play with the controls for a while - you'll get the hang of it - and if not there is always the camera manual (and of course this forum for help and advice)

Hi, thank you, but still don't understand how the aperature will 'close' to whatever I set it on the lens without the camera's 'little rod' pushing it? There is no button on the outside of the lens to 'make it shut' as it were?

Hello.

On the adaptor I have, a cheap generic chinese one, the "little rod" is a fixed tab inside the adaptor which permanently activates the aperture control lever on the lens. I don't get the preview facility I'd get when mounting on my om2n anymore, but I find the camera's (E-P1) built in focusing aid, "enlarged display option", invaluable.
I run my E-P1 in full manual mode, setting aperture on the lens and shutter speed on the camera, relying on the cameras built in exposure meter but I frequently under-expose, experience has shown me that produces the results I want. I set the ISO to what I'd feel was relevant to the overall light and conditions, much as I'd hope to select  film.
It suits my way of thinking as I really only ever wanted a digital replacement for the om2n.

I hope you enjoy using the camera with om lenses as much as I do.

i exclusively use OM lenses on my P2. don't worry about being able to adjust the aperture. once the lens is locked into the adapter, you can use the aperture ring normally.

i am a complete noob and i just leave it on aperture priority mode (A). i then review the file details on my PC to get an idea what ISO and shutter speed the camera adjusted each picture to. hopefully i will be able to go fully manual one day.
Olympus E-P2, VF-2, MF-2: OM 28 2.8, OM 28mm 3.5, OM 50mm 1.8 (25mm OM extension tube), OM 100mm 2.8, C-M Pentax 25mm f/1.4
