Olympus 9-18?
« on: December 11, 2011, 06:55:30 PM »
Hi!

I'm André from Sweden, and I've had some minds about start photographing architecture with my E-P3. I don't know if it is a good type of photographing for the MFT-system, what do you guys think?

If you think it's a no problem task, which lens to you think is the best one? I've been looking for Olympus 9-18 but neither know if it is better with a prime lens. I have the 17mm from Olympus.

I would be very happy for answers!

PS. I saw the very nice photos of Sydney Harbour Bridge here on the forum, taken with that 9-18mm lens, magnific! DS.
Best wishes to you all!

Architecture would be one of the best uses for the Olympus 9-18mm, because most of the time a shorter field of view doesn't give you the full scope of what you're photographing. It's equivalent to 18mm on the wide end for full frame, and that's generally wide enough for most applications.

Thanks for your fast answer! I was looking around more on this fine community and became wondering if I had posted in the right section of the forum, and never thought I would have an answer today :)

So you don't think it's better with a prime than a zoom? The zoom gives some better opportunities if you don't have enough space at the moment, but most times primes has better image quality, that's my experience.
Best wishes to you all!

Well considering the Olympus 12mm is the only prime at a reasonable range for architecture, the price may become too much of an issue. The quality of the Olympus 9-18mm is superb though, so if you don't need the constant f/2.0 aperture, I doubt you'll notice anything. You'll also have the added range for more applications with the zoom as well. That being said, the Olympus 12mm has some really good quality, it just might not be wide enough.

Today I've ordered the 9-18 with a light shade, hurray! :)

I think most of the time when you're shooting architecture you use smaller apertures than 2.0, but I haven't been photographing any architecture yet.

Do you have any nice tips about that kind of photographing, or should I ask the question in another section here?

I would really like to learn about architecture photographing.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I did leave a post in the section Photographic Techniques to have better possibilities for help.

The increased field of view of the 9-18mm makes it the right choice for architecture use although you could make do with the 12mm lens. I have both and before I started shooting ultrawide on my Nikon D90, the Olympus 9-18mm was my main lens.
Be nice to each other, life is too short for anything else.
