Olympus 4/3 12-60mm f/2.8-4 on a E-P1. Am i MAD?
« on: February 06, 2011, 05:01:10 AM »
Surfing the net for Oly lenses i came across the 12-60mm f2.8-4 Olympus four thirds lens and thought this is my perfect all round walk about zoom range. I'm basically looking for a replacement for the 24-105mm f4L that i had when i had an EOS DSLR. SO...with an adapter would this lens just be too huge, heavy and silly on the E-P1? I have not been able to find any images of this lens on a E-P1. If it was light enough and not too big i think it could work. If Olympus are planning a M4/3 version (like the 9-18mm ) then I'll wait for that.

Thanks
Andy

Check out this link... it will definitely give you an idea on size.

http://www.four-thirds.org/en/special/matching.html

The combination is pretty big... although size is relative.

Thanks for the link. I have had a play and it does look HUGE!!!! Not sure if it would be manageable as the whole point of going M4/3 was less weight and bulk so may wait to see what new lenses Oly/Pana bring out over the next few months.

Here's a pic i put together. i did a pic of my E-PL2 as this is the camera it would live on.

That is enormous, man! It will surely work, but AF will be slower than native m4/3 lenses and the weight will be difficult to handle (also having in mind that E-Pxs are more difficult to handle than DSLRs).

I read elsewhere about this combination working out well in terms of IQ, but it will be awkward, difficult if not   impossible to handle on a E-P1. On the other Pen cameras you could pair it with the EVF which would make it more manageable.

There is a vid of this set up and it does look huge but not as bad as the image above. There is also a video of an E-PL1 taking video with this lens and the IQ is impressive but as said before the reason to go PEN was to reduce bulk and if i had that lens i may as well buy a big camera to fit it to. If only they could make it the same size as the 9-18mm.

The top view makes it not look so bad. The side view however, well, it looks huge.

It is more than three times bigger than the kit zoom when collapsed. I suppose it is at least four times heavier than it due to the F/2.8 max. aperture and weather sealing. I have a Sigma 18-50 F/2.8 EX DC MACRO on my Pentax K-r and it is difficult to handle even on a DSLR body with rubber grips and the like. It will be much more difficult to handle on a flat tiny body like E-P1.
I guess you should rather wait for the promised m4/3 Pro- type lenses by Olympus.

Hi -

I've used it on my EP1. It is slightly outrageous, but works really well. You have to view it as a lens with a small camera attached to it. Works much better than the 70-300. :-)

Or the OM 180 f2.8.

I used the 11-22mm Olympus 4/3 on my E-P2 and generally loved it. Its definitely not about compactness but all about image quality.

Note that the Olympus 14-54mm MkII lens is said to be a reasonable AF performer with the latest firmware update in both camera and lens. More compact and cheaper too however the range of the 12-60mm lens is very appealing.
Be nice to each other, life is too short for anything else.

I've just got an adaptor for the e-p1, and I've been trying all my Oly lenses on there. They actually balance remarkably well, and the faster apertures are just a plus! I say go for it.
