Minor Panasonic 20mm mystery
« on: July 30, 2010, 12:02:50 PM »
In playing around with my Panasonic 20mm, I noticed something slightly odd: in A and M modes, I can select f/1.7, but in any of the auto modes, the E-P1 "only" goes down to f/1.8. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a firmware thing?

I think that's because the auto mode only detects one third increments of the ISO. I don't know if they ever updated the firmware for that. Also, Olympus doesn't have a Micro Four Thirds lens that goes below f/2.8.
Have you used your E-P1 lately?

Mine does go down to 1.7 when I point the E-P1 at a dark spot in my living room at night.

Yes, you're right Olof. When I point it at a darker area in my room, the aperture drops from f/1.8 to f/1.7. Rather odd algorithm. As voyager noted, it's probably because f/1.8 is the next 1/3 f-stop down from f/2.
