Lumix G Vario 7-14mm
« on: October 04, 2009, 11:36:19 PM »
How good is the Lumix G Vario 7-14mm......

I plan to put order on this lens.......

Beside that, I also interested the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 Pancake.

So which should i get?

I already own 2 of the E-P1 kitlens...and FL-30R

I've only seen one photo shot with the 7-14mm Lumix lens, but it looks great. Check it out:

Evening Sky Over The City

I believe it's around 1000 bucks for that lens. Yikes :)

I've got currently:
Oly 14-42mm
Oly 17mm/2.8
Lumix 20mm/1.7

I acquired the 20mm yesterday, so don't have much to say about it. I'm going to bring it up to San Francisco this weekend and see what shakes loose.

Hi,
few days ago I had the chance to try it and take some shoots with the 7-14 on the E-P1.
A bunch of things I noticed:

- Really compact: but personally I didn't like the integrated hood and the lack of a filter thread.
- Very little vignetting for an ultra wide
- Quite sharp at the borders (not as a knife, but more than I expected)
- Astonishingly rectilinear (albeit I don't know how much is due to the software, how much to the lens itself)

In conclusion: perhaps too much expensive (I mean, here in Europe it is REALLY expensive), but definitely some serious glass here...  ;)

Hope this helps.

Ad maiora,
M.

I have both the ZD 7-14mm f/4 ED, which I use with my Olympus E-3 and the Panasonic Lumix G Vario 7-14mm f/4 ASPH, for my E-P1:

Together, Finally...

At 1/3 of the weight and about half the MRSP, the Lumix is the most affordable introduction to rectilinear extreme wide-angle photography in the market.

Where is this feature useful to have?

1) Interior shots in cramped spaces...

Addictive Nest

Ready, Set...

2) Street photography...

Individuality

At Her Feet

3) Or landscape photography in need of some drama to emphasize a point...

Inagotable...

The Rice is Ripe...

(Note: Olympus E-3 + ZD 7-14mm f/4 ED used for the latter three examples).

While the ZD is weathersealed, the Lumix isn't.

Both, however, have a fixed built-in hood which is an inevitable feature to avoid unnecessary glare in such extreme focal lengths.

And while none can take a filter, this is a blessing in disguise: it was because of this that I had to learn to shoot without filters.

The end result was a substantial improvement of my skills at finding the right exposure...

Here are some more shots taken with both of these lenses as posted in my flickr website:

All in all, the smaller Lumix is as capable optically as its 4/3 predecessor. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
