Issues with Panasonic 20mm 1,7 on my E-PL1
« on: June 21, 2011, 05:27:47 AM »
Every time the camera autofocus the lens goes 1,7 and then back to the prefered aperture when focused. And when the apertureblades move the lens make very loud clicks. Have I missed anything here?

Never heard anything like it before.

I have the same 'issues'. Also when I touch the lens with my finger it refocusses or makes a noise.
I guess(hope) it is normal.

It's been discussed many times here. Although illogical, this is pretty normal.
BTW, even the kit lens clicks when changing aperture, focusing, etc, although it is very hard to hear it.

I do wonder how this could be normal because I seem to have the issue from time to time. I have noticed the high clicks a couple of times but not everytime I use the camera and lens. Thats not normal to me and I will return it later this week for another lens. Or have I totally missed something about this type of lens? Could it be an issue with the lens and my Olympus PEN E-PL1 when they communicate?

I believe it happens in bright scenes (daylight/sunlight) and has something to do with the camera processor closing the aperture in order to protect the sensor from burn-ins because it is not covered by a mirror/shutter like in DSLRs.
Anyway, since I don't have the 20 and even if I had it, it would be impossible to compare the sound from the two lenses over a web forum, you could take the lens back to the shop and see if other lenses of the same type make that noise too. Please note that you would have to compare in bright light in order to hear the clicks.

They are officially compatible (that's the sweet part of being officially recognized by the same standard).
You could try updating firmware in both just in case.

BTW, don't point your camera directly to the sun.
