I dropped my kit lens
« on: January 25, 2012, 02:47:10 PM »
Unfortunately while bridge hunting yesterday, it fell right out of my pocket and on the concrete. It still does everything fine, and just sustained a small scratch, but if I look at the front of the lens on the inside, it looks like a little gear is exposed and the outer part of the aperture ring might have broken, but I don't hear anything rattling, so is this just something that all the lenses look like?

That is the advantage of light weight plastic design. If it was a metal construction it probably would be destroyed.

Which kit lens is it?
When I look into my Olympus 14-42 mk I, there is indeed a cutout in the ring around the innermost visible lens element. In this cutout there is some brown electronic component visible. Is this what you're seeing?

I think its fine.
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

Yeah it works, and yeah that's what I see. Fascinating, I had never noticed that before.

Damn strong ass kit lens, too.

I also have the O/14-42 ED MkI and it is a kick ass lens in IQ and I am amazed it took that fall, and all is well.

That lens is made of a lot of metal, surprisingly you would not think so.
