First shots with my Olympus M.Zuiko 9-18mm lens
« on: May 11, 2010, 05:23:25 AM »
What a stunning little lens.

The conditions were not great but here are the first serious shots I have taken. These are at 9mm and 18mm respectively.

Both shots are for 13 seconds, f/8.0 and ISO200.

Thanks but NO, I haven't got a clue but can fake it from time to time.  The widest lens I had on a 35mm camera was 28mm and on any other camera had an effective focal length of around 23mm. This is virgin territory for me.

Excellent composition, great light, just the right amount of shutter speed to get a nice effect in the water. The lens looks like it preformed excellent based on this sample. I need to go grab some full size raw files and see how good it is. Either way, I'll be ordering one of these.

I'm going to stick this in the sample archive if that's OK with you.

That's fine but the image is a little dirty (i.e. no serious noise reduction).

I think I'll leave this one here since you started an actual topic for it in the Archive.

Ever tried GIMP? Follow this link for the Windows version:

And RawTherapee for RAW conversion:

Very professional looking shots! Excellent shadow detail and well controlled highlights. I'll have to put that lens on my "one day..." list.

@adash: I tried RawTherapee twice (about a year apart) and I just couldn't get it to work properly. Here's another excellent free RAW converter you might want to try, Scarab Darkroom: http://www.scarablabs.com/scarab-darkroom

im kicking myself over a missed opportunity , i was so very close to buyiong this a week ago when there was a 100 dollar instant rebate and bing  cashback was still  in  effect essentially pricing the lens at about 550 USD

well i decided to get it but as the rebate and the cashback are both no longer in effect i am back to square one , "when your slow you blow"

i really dont want to pay almost 700 dollars for this cool little lens , so im back to waiting

Meh. They shouldn't price it so high.

That being said, let's not bring that topic into this thread.

I've begun to salivate over this lens too, then this occurred to me: paired with the kit zoom, this lens "only" gives you an effective addition of 9-13mm, so that makes the $700 hit that much more painful. Furthermore, when using the 9-18 near its "tele" end, you're bumping at or close to f/5.6, whereas if you have your kit  zoom at 14-18mm, you're at a more respectable f/4-ish. So it would seem to me that you're paying a whole lot of coin for not that much extra functionality. That is unless the 9-18 is so sharp at its long end as to blow away the kit zoom at the equivalent range...

That's my two cents. Perhaps I'm being too cold and logical (and not to mention, frugal)?   :-\

You simply cannot do at 14mm what you can at 9mm. While the numbers are small, that is a big increase in the angle of view and you can take advantage of perspectives that are impossible at 14mm. I would have gone for a moderately priced 7-14mm if it could take filters on the front but there is no such creature so  the 9-18mm is an easy choice. Also, the Olympus 14-42mm won't live with Cokin filters on the front as they are too heavy for the AF motor and the front rotates. I could not use that lens for the stuff I frequently do (seascapes at dawn)

Any hope for a reasonably priced 9 or 10mm prime any time soon?  :-\

I wouldn't think you will be getting an ultra-wide prime any time soon.

Pansonic has a 14mm f/2.5 due out soon.

Olympus have a slightly wider lens in the pipeline, rumoured to be a 12mm lens and probably f/2.8

The Pansonic is unlikely to be cheap and neither will the Olympus but I wouldn't be surprised if it were to be cheaper than the Panasonic.
