Do you like pancakes? Pancake lenses suitable with m4/3.
« on: January 20, 2011, 10:16:51 AM »
Here´s a link that gives an overview of ´pancake´-designed lenses that easily can be fitted to a m4/3 (mount) camera (directly or via an adapter):

                        http://www.beanos.com/~tsoutij/wp/stuff/index-of-pancake-lenses

Which one do you have experience with, and would recommend to other m4/3 mount canera users?  Demonstrate with your photo(s), if possible.

Yes I really like pancakes, especially on kit designed for portability. I like the 20/1.7 pancake on the E-P1 (though i would like the looks of the 17 on the camera better!) because it combines a small profile with AF which seems appropriate to the design and function of this camera (MF is less important to me on the Pen, in part because I also shoot with a Bessa with all MF lenses). I am thinking of getting a 17 or the 14 m43 pancakes, but for a longer lens there are currently no options in native m43 mount. I have the Olympus OM 50/1.8 MF which I like but which is rather large when you consider the adapter.

A guy on another forum was just recommending the Hexanon 40/1.8 as highly portable, but doing a search on it what I came up with is that although the lens itself is flat and small, once you add the adapter it extends quite a way out from the body. Anyone try the Hexanon, or know of another lens in the 40-50 range that cuts a small profile on a E-P1?

I have the Panasonic G 20mm f/1.7. It is a wonderfully sharp and fast lens to work with. I do like the fact that it can focus very close also.
I had the Olympus 17mm f/2.8 at first. but, I realized I take a lot pictures at my wife's family homes when we visit, and f/2.8 just didn't cut the muster. And I don't like using flash for those photos.

I have owned the Pentax M 40mm f/2.8 pancake (The Original Pentax Pancake), it is was OK, sharpness was good, not stellar, the biggest draw back, was that mine had a bit more barrel distortion than I liked. It is easily corrected with most modern editing software though. I only used this on my Pentax film camera.

On the Hex 40mm f/1.8.. it is a great performer, and although by adding and adapter for m4/3 use, will add a inch or so, it is no bigger than a regular 50mm on a Film SLR. For the money, it is a no brainier. I had in a past life, a Konica FS-1 with a 40mm f/1.8... lovely combo for the day.

Thanks, M5 I will look into it. Any other possibilities out there for pancakes in the 40-50 range suitable for my E-P1? Anyone?
