Best Kit 14-42 Shots...
« on: September 26, 2010, 01:28:12 PM »
I got the PEN a handful of weeks ago.  I shot a bit, two weeks in I realized with a $20 adapter my grandfathers and fathers Canon FD lenses would work with the camera... and I have barely looked back at the kit lens since.  I saw a photo of a lizard in these forums the other day shot with the kit lens that blew me away. Have I prematurely tossed out my interest in the kit lens?  I feel as if, while easier to take a shot (auto focus, zoom, etc) my pictures don't look nearly as impressive (not that they are impressive, impressive to/for me).  The first day I had it I was blown away by the clarity, now I can't seem to take the Canon FD 50mm off the lens!

Post some shots with the 14-42 that impress you?

The forum gallery is full of such. And there is a dedicated thread in the lens sample board:

The major advice about the kit zoom: Stop it down to F/5.6 or F/8, if light allows that. Take your pictures in the middle of the zoom range and stop it down again.

I just got an adapter for my Canon FD 50mm and did some test shots and was surprised to see how poor it performed until you stop down to f/5.6 and beyond (especially for corner sharpness).

I've given up on the kit lens - it probably works well in parts of the world with strong light but I've had little joy from it. I get far more satisfaction with MF glass.

It will be on ebay shortly with the E-P1 body to help pay for an E-P2 + EVF - focussing with the LCD is just too time consuming.

Or you could sell them to me. :-P

I liked the first kit lens I had a lot. The macro works wonderfully.

I agree, the close focus ability of the kit zoom is quite impressive--you can essentially get as close as the length the lens. That's pretty darn good for a zoom that's not even touted as "macro".

Nice shot BTW, voyager.

Could indeed Voyager - but I think we agreed that the UK-US postage costs might kill the deal...

Nice shot of the rose indeed...I have little argument over the close range qualities, it's the other end of the scale that disappoints me.

Ah, the wide angle is slightly depressing, but I have photos that made it worth the hassle.

I remember when zooms starting at 28mm was a big deal. Have we become so jaded already? I'm fairly happy the kit zoom range. Much better than the useless 35-85 kit zooms that they use to put on the film SLRs.

Never really been a fan of zooms - I am fairly conservative and like walking up to things to get closer (provided my feet don't get wet)

My few tele lenses get very rare outings, mainly for architectural detail I can't reach or when busy roads/rivers/canals get in the way that I can't cross.

Yes, I find that my teles are seldom used--only if I'm trying to shoot/video an outdoor stage show when I'm on vacation. Otherwise, it's only used when I'm trying to get a shallow DOF. That's largely unnecessary now that I have the 20mm.

I believe what you're referring to is the stabilization activating...

Try starting the camera without the lens in order to check if it is really the lens making the noise.
