Any good wide-angle manual old skool budget lenses?
« on: December 21, 2010, 12:01:59 PM »
Guys,

I love using my OM 50mm f1.8 lens and really love the fact I can use old skool lenses on the E-P1. However, I wondered if anyone knew of any wide-angle manual lenses I could purchase? I know the E-P1 pretty much doubles the mm because of the x2 sensor so I'd have to get something really low...is that right?

Any feedback would be great :)

That may be a bit difficult to fill your order...
Yes, with a 2x factor, for a 28mm fov you need a 14mm... a FF 14 is a fish-eye... not the best way to go...
Your best is one these lenses made for m4/3 cameras
Panasonic 14mm (28mm fov)
Olympus 17mm (34mm fov)
Panasonic 20mm (between a 35 an 50 fov)

a used 17 can be found for under $170.00 in great condition.
Your best bet IMO...

OR:  Get a used kit lens 14mm-42/45mm (28mm-84/90mm fov)

A 17mm-21mm FF (34mm - 42mm fov) lens may be the best on MF lenses.. Look for Soligar, Vivatar, other 3rd party brands... they won't be cheap, but, should be under $200.00 USD

Thanks chaps, I've actually got a 17mm olympus lens that I got with the E-P1. I quite like the lens but I'm currently in the process of trying to sell it so I can get the Panasonic 20mm because it's quicker and therefore better in low-light situations.

Maybe a silly question but would i not be able to take say a fisheye 8mm lens to work as a decent 16mm wideangle lens or would that just be wrong?

I really wanted something like a Lumix G Vario 7-14mm but not for £650 however I don't think that's going to happen any time soon!

Thanks,

SirLylos

That would be both expensive (as expensive as your 17mm m.Zuiko or even more) and sort'a useless. It will become a FullFrame fish eye with a diagonal angle of view probably less than 180deg. You can check out the sample picture for the Panasonic m4/3 8mm fisheye:

http://www.four-thirds.org/en/microft/single.html#i_008mm_f035_panasonic

It's not the same lens that you mean, but it can give you an idea what your images will look like (or close to).

Well try this one: http://www.amazon.com/Rokinon-FE8M-Fisheye-Olympus-Black/dp/B003L22Q3I/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1293016861&sr=1-3  Looks fine to me, give you 17mm on M4/3.

Some review:http://dpanswers.com/roztr/lens_show.php?id=227&pid=SA835F&s=

For me I just go for the Panasonic 8mm..but that is coz it's designed by Leica and the quality is worth that $900.. :D

Thanks for the example adash, I see what you mean with the angle - that's a bit too crazy for my liking.

I love the shots the Olympus 7-14mm takes so it may be that I eventually go with this:

Olympus E-P1, Panasonic 20mm f1.7, Olympus OM 50mm f1.4, Sigma OM 80-200mm f3.5, FL-14 Flash Gun.

Does anyone think Panasonic or Olympus will make a 10mm or 12mm prime some day? I'd like something wider than 14mm. The Oly 9-18 is relatively affordable, but I hate paying for the 14-18mm overlap with my 14-150. The Panasonic 7-14 makes me drool, but the price tag takes my breath away. The Panny 8mm fisheye is less expensive--but can one justify $900 for a fixed lens that takes novelty photos?

We all need to email Oly and Panny for an under $400.00 10mm or 12mm, and make it f/4 to keep the price down, then in 6 months, they release a 12mm f/2 for low light geeks.
Voigtlander had a 21mm f/4 Snapshot Skopar that was and still is just outstanding. I mean it was "Really Sharp"and distortion free (well 95% anyway)  and sold for under $500.00 with an external VF...

a few samples when I owned one with a Bessa 2 RF
FILM RF loaded with Fuji 100 I think..

Anyway, a 10/11 or 12mm f/4 would be popular because of price.

That is a 42mm fov on m4/3 though... cheaper to get the Pany 20mm f/1.7, just as sharp IMO, unless you have Leica M, or LTM film body or a Epson R-D1 (The 1st Leica M mount Digital RF, 1.5 crop makes it a 30mm fov.  :) )

The 20mm is definitely an upgrade. There have been some recent deals on it too.
