20/1.7 needs ND Filter
« on: January 30, 2011, 10:55:55 AM »
I often find that the Pany 20/1.7 gets to much light wide open at ISO 100 on a bright day. (1/4000 is blinking) I just leave an ND filter on the lens do deal with this. Is there a way to increase the shutter speed beyond 1/4000?

Has anyone of you experienced the same situation and, if so, how are you dealing with it?

That's not limited to that lens, but any other similarly fast lens can hit that limitation. I also go for the ND filter approach if I have one on me, but I don't find I do much wide open work in bright light so it isn't major for me.
Cameras big and small: Sony HX9V, Olympus E-P1, Canon 300D (IR mod), 7D and many others!

I have a ND.6 (3 stops) that I use on my ZM 50mm f/1.5 and my 20mm f/1.7... B&H, B&W brand, under $50.00
If you use f/1.7 in bright daylight, a 3 stop ND filter will be needed.

You can not increase shutter speed over 1/4000, but you can stop down the lens to F/2.8 or F/4 for these conditions.

I was trying to do some close ups with minimum DOF. Also annoying was that the autofocus preferred to focus on the background, but we covered that subject previously.

Many thanks for your response.
