20 f/1.7
« on: March 20, 2011, 06:22:30 PM »
So, how does everyone like this lens?  So far in the few days I've had this E-P1, I've not been to happy with the quality of the 14-42.  I've ended up deleting most pictures taken with said lens.  I've looked at the lens archive for it and it does look like a good lens.

I  think my main problem is I'm used to using Canon L glass.  I've not really had any nice sharp images yet with my 14-42.  Just tried some shots with my monolight to see how those come out.  Maybe I just got a bad 14-42..

The kit lens won't resolve as high as "Luxury" glass.
But, the 20mm does resolve higher than the Kit, and 17mm, not "Luxury" standards, but close.

The warning signs in the non-re-sized originals are readable as far the larger words.

I thought it stood for expensive, but there is no L in there.  I donno.  Need to do some more shooting with it, I had IS1 turned on and it seemed when I had IS off, the images where better.  There are some graffitied out boxcars close to my work I've been meaning to shoot.  Think I'll give this a test tomorrow when it's not so late that I might be crazy.

Panther, none of my images have come anywhere close to being as sharp as the ones you posted.

Are there 2 versions of the 14-42?

The Oly 14-42 kit lens is, by far, the best ´kit lens´ I ever saw.  I have been shooting Canon ´all my life´, and I have never seen any Canon ´kit lens´ for (standard) EOS cameras that can even be close to the Oly 14-42.  I do not find it great-great, but ´quite good´, - and for being a kit lens: even more so.  Also I do not believe that the 14-42 should compete with Canon's "L-glass", - price alone forbids that.  Also I believe that not all L-glass is give ´fantastic´ IQ on any house, - most of them need a premium house to shine, as well.  Just my two cents.   :)

Yeah, my 14-42mm is an amazing kit lens. I'm still amazed at how sharp it is.

Not trying to make them compete against either other or really compare..  I just wanted better IQ.

That's with my monolight, EXIF is intact.  Had to do noise reduction and some sharpening.

If you want the best image quality though, then the 20mm will be perfect for you. Only downside is it's a 20mm, if you don't like prime lenses.

Olympus kit 14-42 definitely beats the NEX 18-55....

Try shooting some more & working with the camera... :)

That's fine for the E-P1.  I want to keep that kit as simple as possible.  I wouldn't mind the 20mm along with a longer lens, but that 45mm is $$$..

The newer version is designed to be movie and stills compatible so it's much quieter when focusing. I hear that it's sharper too.

the epx+20mm should be sharper than your 40d and 24-70.
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

The kitlens is a very good lens in good light conditions. In low light the 20mm is very fast and takes great pictures.
The 20mm is sharper but most of the times a picture doesn't have to be sharp.

I exaggerated a bit, but colors, contrast, framing and creativity is more important than sharpness.

I have the 20mm 1.7 and am very pleased with it, BUT I also have a couple of Zuiko old glass item from my OM1 days. I'm starting to really like the Zuiko 50mm 1.4 on this camera. It's not fantastic at f1.4, but from f2 is really gives great dof management, and I have taken some really nice portraits.

You could do a lot worse (expense and quality wise) than this setup.
