Canon FD 50mm f/1.2 Samples *****
« on: July 08, 2011, 10:10:37 PM »
My morning walk-around brought me these on the PEN sensor to-day. E-P2 and Canon FD 50mm/f1.2.  Handheld and some wind, not the easiest under the circumstances.
(Do this lens already exist in the Lens Archive?  If not, - may the admin can move the post to where it belongs then).

Very hot to-day, - and still a lot of flowers to shot around here.  Will revisit when the temperature is more favorable.  And maybe (only maybe, though  :) ) I will then bring a tripod along.  Would have been advantageous to-day, for sure.

Also have a question: The adapter I got for the FD lens is branded "Pixco" (believe that's what it reads, - difficult to see, - small letters).  I'm not very happy with the build quality, - the locking system doesn't make me confident.  Also the lens' f-number function seems to be not moving freely when I want it set to f1.2.  Anybody own the same adapter?  Those of you with FD lenses, - what brand are you happy with?
Please advise.

Hope you enjoy, - and thanks for looking in.

regards

Is this the standard 50mm FD f/1.2 or the "L" version? (Red band on the nose)

Thanks, folks!

I came from (Canon) rangefinders (Canonet, then QL17) to FSLR (Contax) in the mid-seventies.  Held on to Contax (and Yasicha) until late eighties (-87?) when I went for the (then new, fabulous) EOS 620, - which (to me meant the introduction to EF lenses, as well).  So I missed the FD boat completely, - I really haven't a clue to those glasses.  No 'red ring' on the newly acquired FD 50mm/f1.2.  The f-ring has a green "A" ca. 8-10mm to the right from the given f-numbers.  Between (f)1.4 and (f)1.2 there is a 'sign', as this: ↵ (without the arrow, though, - and the horizontal line double the length shown here).  (Serial #: 52846, - if that might give a clue here). The lens is quite heavy, solid built & operates very smoothly on focusing.  Full and half 'click' stops on the f-ring.  Painted numericals: Green feet, white meters, - f-numbers all whites.  In-hand overall feeling: Quality! Given a week or three I'll try to cough up smth. more from google.  I'm sure some of the experienced forum members here might be able to add in on this.

More Canon FD 50mm/f1.2 familiarization

My routine morning walk-around, also to-day brought along the E-P2 with the Canon FD 50/f1.2 mounted.  Handheld, not so windy to-day. Still not quite familiar with the Canon FD, - cannot get the f-ring to f1.2.  Returning home, these came off the sensor. (All at A-pri, MF, - most at fairly low f-numbers).

Thanks for looking in.

I got one of these too with an unbranded adapter. The aperture ring doesn't even work on mine, but it doesn't matter as I'm in the process of doing a mount conversion on it and will hard wire the aperture ring later. If that proves too hard I might just fix it to f/1.2, after all, that's why I got it :)

Roger - if it has no red ring it's the standard 50 f/1.2.  Canon made two different 50mm f/1.2 lenses for the new FD mount.  One was the 'consumer' version, which is the one you have, and the other had aspherical elements and a completely different design, and that was the 50mm f/1.2L.  The price difference on eBay seems to be around $400 extra for the L.  I don't have any experience and haven't seen too many impressions on the non L variant, though the L is supposed to be one of the best 50mm lenses ever made.

@popo: I don't believe I get out the lens' potential with the adapter I have now.  I'll work on getting hold on a different (and better, more adequate) adapter.  Any good advise on this matter is welcomed, appreciated and much obliged.

@ jman: Thanks for you info, jman.  When I bought this lens, I was not made to believe this was a Canon L version lens.  However, one thing's for sure: 'Consumer' lenses of to-day are not built like this (one)!.  How the optical quality should be rated, I'm not yet in a position to judge, as by yet.  Far too few shots, - but it looks well above 'average' to to-days standard.  I'll get back to this thread as soon as I feel qualified to express an well considered opinion on that.

@cosinaphile: Thanks, cosinaphile, for your input. Please do remember, I couldn't be able to go lower than to f1.4 ,due to the 'faulty' (?) adapter (see above).  The min. distance i measured to be ca. 50cm, - maybe a cm or three less than that. (Most of the photos above I put the lens on 'minimum distance' on the 'meter' ring, then moving (a bit) back-and-fort to max [apparent] focus.  Mind you, no tripod, and some wind effect in play here.  No close-up filter in use.

Mine is custom made by a local machinist and it has nothing to do with setting aperture. There is nothing too critical with the locking system either, as in FD it is on the lens, not on the camera body. I see mine makes 1/4 of a turn when not restrained, but half of that should be enough too.
I was not able to close the aperture on mine and then found a small lever on the lens bottom that must be pushed for the aperture ring to function (You won't be able to see its action when the lens is dismounted - put the adapter on the lens). I solved my problem quickly with a piece of cardboard.

I'm going for a mount conversion so I'm not looking at adapters. If I ever find someone who can do small metalwork jobs cheaply I might even finish it some day...

the problem you have may be correctable
the  fd adapter i have  is nice quality , it ia all metal and is unbranded  and has a ring on it to stop up and down to allow accurate focusing at 2.8 then stop down to a preset f stop , or if my fd lens is set to A then the ring allows full continuous f stops from wide open to f 32 steplessly.

the issue of quality comes up alot in comparing adapters......my 180 us dollar voigtlander M- m4\3  adapter ,though nicely made otherwise, and precise at infinity was branded at its base voiglander and made in japan in some kind of white paint that has flaked away to illegability :o

the 35 dollar fd adapter ,on the other hand, is engraved on its black barrel  , FD -M4\3
the legend on the baked black paint has proved tough and and scratch resistant the engraving is as crisp as the day i bought it
the fd adapter focuses the tiniest fraction past infinity, which the voigtlander is exactly correct at , but this is no problem in use at all
in fact it may be a design feature of the lens toallow correct infinity focus at all temp extremes

now to the problem , ive got almost the same adapter for nikon f mount and
it didnt allow the lens to open alll the way up....the problem is a pin that pushes the  lens just as in the canon if the pin is bent in a certain direction
the problm is fixed ,,the bending only needs to be very slight.

disengage the lens and adapter  keeping them coupled , from the camera

look inside and observe the direction of the pin slide and what it presses on to
move f stops.. with your finger you can test if a further sliding of the fd part will
open it u completely, using a piece of plastic to press the pin a fraction further will fix the problem ... it did on my nikon , and the nikon and fd adapters work
the same way ,i found

i love my 200 2.8 fd on my ep1 ........ it is very very good
good luck
edit
i only buy adapters from rainbow imaging ,david , who has become a friend , i think he comes from hong kong.
is my contact thru rainbow imaging on e bay, hes a really nice guy who gives me incredible deals  on adapters
and meets me in whole foods cafe in manhattan , if im ordering several adapter or other stuff...rainbow imaging shipps their chinese adapters from nyc

if you goto rainbow imaging and text the seller a question tell david you know  paul [cosinaphile] thru ep1dotnet
and want a good deal he will probably be accomidating , give him your e mail and hell give you the info you need
should you wish to buy anything adapter flash trigger etc related
he even sells a c mount 35mm 1.4 with adapter for m4\3 for 38 dollars us funds [$28 for the lens alone]
his prices are great

tell your a friend of paul thru the website here

I believe it's the opposite here. At least on my lens, the lever needs to be pushed in order to stop down the lens, not to open it. If you don't push it at all, it should stay open....
Thus speaking, could this be a problem with the lens itself?
Does it open wide when dismounted from the camera?

ON MY FD 200 2.8 when it is mounted to theadapter, default is wide open, the pin from the adapter presses the lever when the adapter ring is turned , stopping down the lens

when the fd lens is disengaged from the adapter the levers do nothing and the lens seems broken , stuck at something like f 8 0r 11, but the lens is fine , it needs to be mounted to the adapter first , so you can trouble shoot the problem which is the pin  angle in all probability

A moderator could do that too. I hope I found the correct topic, this one is quoted as FDn 50/1.2 in the Index.
