Super Cosina 70-210mm 1:4.5 - 5.6 MC MACRO Samples *****
« on: November 21, 2011, 06:27:16 PM »
Hello all,

I posted this in a different section a while ago and never added any samples, I guess I forgot... whoops.

Anyway, the story behind this lens is that I found it at a thrift store for $6.99 Canadian! I was so happy with the deal that I'm not going to take the $6.99 sticker off. Works great, no problems with it so far. Goes from f/22 to f/4.5 and I have it attached with my OM-M4/3 adapter (from ebay).

These were taken indoors with lamp-light on my E-P1, maybe not the best conditions but not too terrible.

f/4.5:

f/11:

f/22:

cosinaphile like  :D

sometimes contrast can be enhanced by using a step ring over the front.... one that goes from the native diameter of the filter thread to a diameter that covers the perimeter of the glass covering about 1\4 of the optic  ,i use one on my 105micro nikor  and it really enhances contrast

ive also used lens reverse rings for m 4\3 to 52mm thread  they cost about 5 bucks on the internet the opening of the mount locking rim really limits perhiphial

cool setup, very detailed at 4.5, f11 is still quite sharp! a tiny bit of contrast could also be added in camera or post
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

Looks like you were able to get focus easier than I thought. This doesn't look like 1:1 magnification though.

I don't really know anything about macro photography actually, the lens says 1:4 is the largest scale, how do I achieve 1:1 magnification?

Ah, then it's not a true Macro lens. I was wondering about that.

Easiest way without losing light... a +2 or so close up lens ...  OR Crop! :D

if im not mistaken 1:4 in full frame becomes defacto 1:2 with a micro 43"crop

Yes, that's right.. I tried this with my 55mm Micro Nikkor that goes to 1:2, I shoot a 35mm negative, I had maybe a few mm out side the full frame.

Well, it's still 1:4 magnification...but it gets you the same coverage as 1:2 does on full frame.  The magnification doesn't change though.  1:4 magnification means that the object will be projected onto the sensor at 1/4 life size (so if you take a picture with this lens at max magnification, a 10mm object will project an image 2.5mm in size on the sensor.

In practical terms, of course, the field of view is the same as a lens with twice the magnification on full frame.

Correct, the FOV has not changed for the lens, nor has the focal length... a 55mm is still a 55mm on a m4/3, but the sensor only sees 1/2 the image circle, so a perceived 110mm fov is the result.
Correct, the sensor crops the 1:4 by 1/2, so the "Defacto" ratio is 1:2 on the sensor, since the image circle of lens is 2x larger than needed for m4/3 (Which is the same as a 1/2 Camera in size.. Olympus has always had a large selection 1/2 frame film camera's in the past).

If you familiar with "wet printing", it is like having an 8x10 frame on the easel, but, lifting the 8x10 frame off the easel to crop, instead of raising the enlarger head higher... The image at the easel has not changed., but image on the 8x10 has, because it is higher than the easel.
