Soligar 105mm f/2.8 M42 Preset Samples *****
« on: December 29, 2011, 01:12:30 PM »
Got a Soligar 105mm f/2.8 M42 with a preset diaphram
in the mail today...

Really small lens for a 105mm.... more like the old Leitz Hector style body

It does have like 15 blades, but one is partially dislodged and intrudes into the iris opening.. a simple and cheap fix for my Repair Guy....

It looks like it will be good performer...

here are 2 photos... 1st at f/2.8, and the 2nd at f/5.6

Cell Phone Photo...

Focus on the Flower Stand

Focus on the nut nearest the front on the top of the AC unit

There's something I like about this lens's photos.

The Bokoh in distance things is very smooth, w/o a lot of edge craziness. That is one thing I like... 15 blades iris = ROUND IRIS at any f/stop.(but the Optical Formula also plays a role)...many lenses have a more hexagon shape and tends to have a different edge rendering in OOF objects, as many if not all 5-8 blade iris f/stops have. although some 7/8 blade iris's PLUS a thoughtful optical formula can make also provide a nice Bokoh also. 9+ blades seems to have more round at any f/stop

Finely took out my Old Soligar 105mm f/2.8 M42 Pre-set for a spin outside. The Trees are budding, so I focused on them (at 4-5 feet anyway)

all at f/11, and ISO 320, no G3 on -2 on NR, and no NR in post.

So the more blades in an iris, the more "roundish" will be the bokeh, am I right?

Please allow me to comment on the 'bokeh' statements you (and Peter A.) makes in this post:  All what is said (and asked) is, generally speaking, - and 'in theory', true.  Then again, - according to what I believe I've experienced from use of many different brands, FOV & f-number on each of them: bokeh has a lot to do with other things than only 'number of blades' and/or 'roundish' (or other shape) of the iris.  Lens constructors are able to 'design' the bokeh as they pleases, it seems, - however it also seems to be a reached compromise between what one want, type of lens (e.g. prime or zoom, FOV, f-number, number of elements, number of iris blades, glass quality, etc., etc.). All of which I believe is probably obvious to both you and Peter, but maybe needed to be added?

The number of blades and "roundness" only matters for stopped-down operation. The aperture stop is perfectly circular when open, and bokeh quality depends on many other things: longitudinal chromatic and spherical aberrations, and peripheral rays shading.

I think it has 21 blades, But, all that does is guarantee that it is a circular opening at all f/stops. The Maker can and does control the "Edge Featuring" (DOF Drop off--IE: Smooth Drop-off -- "Leica Like", OR a more "Stepped Drop-Off"),"Highlight Shapes" , More Blades makes some options easier to control, then less blades.
