Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Asph. Canon EOS Samples *****
« on: January 16, 2012, 08:30:14 PM »
The Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 is a fast, manual focus lens that when mounted to a Canon DSLR proves to be quite sharp at the center wide open and has better resolution than the Canon 85LII  moving towards the outer portion of the frame (I've done the comparison).

I finally adapted the Rokinon to my E-P1, via Fotdiox adapter, to throw together some images and see how well the ROK would perform.  No people pictures as of yet, but those will come in the future.

When adapted to the E-P1, the Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 has a 35mm equivalent Field Of View of 170mm lens.  So it's going to be a long lens with a very thin depth of field at bigger apertures.

The lens is awkward on the E-P1, but cups well in my left hand.  The IS system of the E-P1 comes in handy here, but I could get in focus hand helds on static objects at shutter speeds less than 1/100th a sec.

The adapted Rokinon is very sharp wide open, and holds well to the edges of the Mu43 sensor.  Colors and contrast is quite good wide open, and gets really fantastic at f/4.  There is some barrel distortion, but not bad.  Note, in high contrast situations the Rokinon will display strong CA at large apertures.  But no worse than the Canon 85LII.

Results are very pleasing using the adapted Rokinon, however, I find it just too long for my style of shooting with the E-P1.  I'll stick with adapting the Canon 50/1.4 to the E-P1 instead.

Anyway, today's sample to follow.  All samples shot with the E-P1 and wide open.  Any other aperture used will be noted above the image.

f/5.6

Can you start a thread in the Sample Archive also?

We can leave this as a discussion thread about this lens in general.

I have been curious about this lens. Seems like it has good IQ and nice Bokeh also.

Maybe we can ask the head cheese if he can move the whole thing.  I was not sure if I could post in the archive section, so I just posted here.

VOYAGER!?

The adapted Rokinon bokeh is okay, but we are also dealing with a smaller circle of confusion.  The Rokinon's bokeh when mounted to my FF is damn good!

This lens is sold in the EU as SamYang, and is for it's price unbeatable. I am going to buy one to.

I have the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 too and that lens is excellent too, but because of the lack of aperture controle not very usable on the pl1.

Is it comparable with the 45mm from Olympus?
main gear: Canon EOS 600D, Canon 5D, Nikon D3100, Olympus E-PL1, Olympus E-520

Aside from the fact that there is a 40mm focal length difference, one has AF and the other does not.  I have no idea how the IQ compares between the two...

f/1.4, LR3 conversion:

f/2.8, E-P1 jpeg (camera settings=Vivid, +1contrast, +1 sharp).  I do not know where I focussed:

f/1.4, E-P1 jpeg, subject distance 2 meters:

f/1.4, LR3 conversion:

f/1.4, 1/25th sec, iso 400...both images:

In my situation, I find the Rokinon and the E-P1 are not a good match for shallow dof images; static or living.  I have corrected 20/17 vision, but I have to wear reading glasses to focus on the E-P1.  And even when I wear the readers, I have to keep the camera about 12 inches away from my eyes...it is problematic.  I'm sure the EVF would help a bunch, but that ain't going to happen with the E-P1.

When using the Rokinon on my DSLRs, I have little difficulty in nailing focus, but not so much with the E-P1...

All samples with G3 and Rokinon 85/1.4 at f/1.4, unless otherwise noted.
