Pentax 110 18mm 2.8 + W21 Close-up Lens Samples *****
« on: August 13, 2010, 09:37:51 PM »
Two in one excellent lens, i believe that this lens is going to leave all my SLR heavy weight lenses to home, except for special needs. You need a macro and a wide angle lens with bokeh, don't spend so much money! (hope this post won't increase the second market prices!)

Some easy sample pics without any artistic view, just to know how it's perform on my E-P1. (Olives and beer were good!)

i own several copies of the pentax 110 18mm it is a wonderful sharp lens

alas i dont own the pan focus version of that lens

i permanenty mounted a 110 50 mm on a leica extension tube for a "macro" type lens its of limited use but beautifully sharp , it takes in a fov that is about 21\2 " wide  at closest focus

The focal range with the Close-up filter is limited, and the allways 2.8 aperture make the bokeh. You cannot approach too much, then i just wonder about multiplying filters, but anyway that's not my goal.

I've done some samples with the filter on again shooting a framed picture of me when i was very young on my fridge, i love the way to be near and the wide angle, i've tried to reprocuce it with my Minolta 50mm MD macro but i don't have the same wide and dof look.

Ah, i was wanting one and recently there has been an auction which was a looser (i was working at the end of) :
http://cgi.ebay.fr/Asahi-Pentax-Auto-110-Pan-Focus-18mm-lens-F-2-8-w-box-/190425095969 end time AM 04:11:30
When i came back home at 5AM, i found this one where the seller was speaking in its description about the first auction ended, i commented his fast seller reaction, was an immediate buy 10$ less than the first so...
http://cgi.ebay.fr/PENTAX-110-PAN-FOCUS-18MM-f2-8-LENS-W-BUBBLE-CASE-/260646189652 end time AM 06:43:29

I'm not sure about, i saw some samples that won't lead me to think it's an extraordinary lens, poor sharpness on corner, etc.. but i will see and test!

It looks unexpectedly sharp! Is the postcard old, or it was made to look old intentionally?

Was difficult hand held with low light to be perfect with focus, as the dof is very short but..
It's a metallic foil engraved print from Ex-markco.com reacting with the light and its orientation. (click on the statue of Liberty to see a flash demo).

Impressive.

I love the 2nd (monks looking back) and 6th (gable end) photos most.
May I know how you control the aperture on the modified adapter?
How did you enter the EXIF of the manual lens to be used in the photo framing software?

Thanks.

That's an ingenious solution, the lens is a little marvel, the ultimate walk-around lens, especially when set to the hyperfocal distance.

thanks,  to control the aperture  as the lens is so small, no space left  on the front side

I have to remove the adapter from camera and adj the aperture  with the small lever from the back side .

the exif,  speed and iso  by Photoscape ,  f  manually typed

Tamrong, where did you get this lens, and how much was the adapter or did you adapt it yourself? I really want some of these lenses!!!

the set of  3 lens + Pentax 110 camera  usually sold  for around  $40 - 50  on evilbay ,  the adapter is around $40  free ship.

My home made adapter cost me about $10  to made,  free labor cost.

thanks,  yeah  the 18mm + f6.3  DOF  will cover anything from around   1m  to infinity.

Here are some of my first pics with my new lens. I have the 24mm brother on its way, and I've even bidded on the rare 20-40mm f2.8 zoom! I can't imagine any of the current pancake offerings being much better than this little buddy. Especially at the price... $31???  ;)

Remarkable samples of this lens by Nordentro and tamrong impressed me very much.
It's both difficult and expensive to have a set of Pentax auto 110 and the 3 basic lenses in Hong Kong.
To my great joy, a friend in US gave me his old Pentax auto 110 with 18/2.8 when he visited Hong Kong.

My hand easily contains the cute and small camera.

Many people hoped that Pentax Optio I-10 could continue the legend of Pentax System 10. Sadly it can't.

A Pentax-110 to m4/3 adapter cost something USD38.5 in Hong Kong.

(BTW, all shots above were taken with XZ-1 at f/8 and a LED continuous light source)

I was trying the Pentax-110 lens in a small park in town. The vivid colors of flowers and the sturdiness of the tree caught my eyes. At a certain glance, the subjects on the photo seems popping.
f/2.8 - 1/400 sec - ISO 200 (-0.3EV) - Pentax-110 18/2.8

Pentax System 10 (Pentax-110) combines aperture and shutter mechanisms inside the camera. The interchangeable lens has focusing ring but no aperture control. All the lenses have a fixed f/2.8 aperture when being used as an adapted lens on other cameras.

Although I shot this photo wide open, the optics of the lens is very good in that the subject in focus is very sharp.
f/2.8 - 1/160 sec - ISO 200 - Pentax-110 18/2.8

The image from the lens is not flattening at all.
f/2.8 - 1/400 sec - ISO 200 - Pentax-110 18/2.8

Thanks for viewing. I'm looking forward to having the 24/2.8 ... :)
