M5-User: what is flash? :^D

I did have some weird behavior last night, taking shots of my dark brown cats in low light with f/1.7 aperture priority, the view would look bright but the picture came out way under-exposed. I suspect it has something to do with the color of the cat messing with the auto-exposure metering, but I've never seen that with my Olly pancake.

First up, a lovely shot of Eartha Kitt (the Animal Control named her, lovely cat)

Then some pancake comparison shots...First, FOV:

Oly 17mm

Pana 20mm

And some closeup shots in low light:

Oly 17mm f/2.8 1/15s

Pana 20mm f/1.7 1/30s

Panny gets 1/2 the shutter speed, or 2 ISO bumps, out of the f-stop diff, but the Oly focuses about 11cm away while the Panny focuses maybe 5cm further, so for bright "macro" shots (flowers in sunlight, for example) the Oly may be a better bet. Bonus points for identifying the subject of the last two shots. They were taken in my office on a gooseneck clip mount so the positioning is not exacting, but darn close. All shot with E-PL1, and of course no post-processing.
Oly E-PL1, E-P2, 17mm, 14-42mm x 2, 14-150mm, 9-18mm, EVF; Pana 20mm

here are some examples of my PEN STREET PORTRAITS, all captured with my lumix pancake , f 1.7

removed so as not to bloat the forum***

I love those shots franzbohr, I actually added you as a contact on flickr a while back. It's a great example of what the E-P1 can do and there's some really nice post processing going on there.

In fact your shots were the first 20mm ones I saw which led me to eventually purchase it.

Still waiting for mine, I ordered it just before Xmas on that crazy harrisons deal and I hope it comes tomorow!  ;)

Hope yours arrives tomorrow sirlylos......

Mine arrived this morning from Harrisons and certainly don't regret buying it.
I was already convinced by excellent samples seen here and elsewhere - the following couple of shots from today don't do it justice. This first is a slightly cropped shot from my Konica Hexanon 40mm f1.8, which is the nearest fast equivalent I have. It was taken a week or so ago on a similar grey day to today (when I took the second)

This one with the Panny (the TV on the left was off):

And this one from a trip to the store for New Year goodies late this afternoon:

Hey Mikmas, I really hope it is - It looks positive if your's arrived today.

The weirdest thing just happened, I was browsing through the Olympus Pen E-P1 & E-P2 group on flickr and saw that one of the shopping trolleys and it caught my eye - how weird it was you! Liking these regardless of them being quick snaps, you can really see the colour difference on the comparison shots. Very useful as always Mikmas  8)

....you can really see the colour difference on the comparison shots.

Definitely richer and with more depth - I'm absolutely loving this lens, even the focus ring is a joy to use in AF (compared to the zooms)

Scrumptious!

(wait til you see the 'Free Xmas Gift' from Harrisons - I couldn't have lived without it  :o )

Got a pana 1.7 for Xmas!  Loving it.  The only thing I have noticed is I get a blurry lens flare if the sun is hitting it too close on the sides.  Anyone notice this?

He's been!

Just got the lens and it's spot on, I've take a few quick snaps. The Christmas tree shot is nicely detailed up close and the shot of my boy is very clear. Loving the way this arrived early morning so I could test in low light!

Glad it arrived sirlylos!

Got to say your son looks a tad startled at dad's new toy - maybe marvelling that a lens that small can take such ace pics  ;)

He does look a bit shocked doesn't he! I think he's definitely going to be a techno lover like his dad - he can't keep his mitts off the laptop and he's only 6 months.

I got the free gift, what on earth!? It's basically a clock on a stick..it's got some weight to it though, feels expensive. I might try putting it on ebay!

Thanks for your help with the lens mikmas, it's been really valuable and I'm glad I got the 20mm panny, managed to sell the 17mm Oly for £185 in the end so only £15 difference!  8)

Wow, this is a very capable lens!
But it's too expensive for me right now.

Are there any (cheap) alternatives of similar focal length and aperture??

Finding a 20mm or so lens outside the native mount is not going to happen. Leica makes a 21mm f/1.4 I think, Fast FF wides are by nature very difficult to make. With such a wide 90* for FF, a lot correction is needed with large glass diameters. So 99% are f/2.8 to f/4. Most are f/3.5 or f/3.8

For the money, the 20mm f/1.7 is a great lens. and no FF alternatives are available at that price or cheaper.

I really like the last set also...
Many would argue a 40mm fov is to wide for close-up face shots, but, they can make very compelling photos.
