Nikkor N 35mm F1.4 Pre-Ai Samples *****
« on: November 02, 2011, 09:39:51 PM »
Hello all.  I've found the 35mm focal length lens very useful on a Micro 4/3rds body.  It has a very nice perspective, useful for street photography, candid portraiture, even landscapes where you may want or need to isolate part of the scene.  I own several different 35's, this one which is about 40 years old, a couple pre-Ai Nikkor O, and three different Canon's.  I use this one the most because it is the most versatile.  It allows me to turn a relatively static, dimensionally-flat scene into a moody, spacious vision... It's wild and soft and flare-ey...veiled, wide open, yet stopped down it's critically sharp.  It's my Jeckyl and Hyde lens.  It's my ultimate Bar-Room portrait lens, or my best "I shot the bearded lady in the sideshow swallowing swords" lens.  Though the field of view is narrower than a typical normal lens for a m4/3rds camera, it's easy to adapt to the change.  All my 35's work well on my M4/3rds cameras, but this one gets most of my attention... It's that big hunk of glass, that extra full stop of speed if I need it, that bit of whimsey to paint over the drab!

A rare lens to find, and a lot cheaper than a Leitz 75mm f/1.4 Summilux for the M's !!!!
The Bokeh is really nice, and the fall off is wonderful (Flower Close-Up) Great colors too, not too saturated.

Yep, as far as rarity is concerned, I've found the best place to find interesting lenses like this is the places you're not expecting them.  In this particular case, I was buying a Nikon FM-2 and "several other lenses" off a guy on Craig's List.  I buy and sell quite a bit of photo equip. part time for extra money.  Anyway, when I arrived and found this lens inside an original Nippon Kogaku leather and velvet lens case, I just about had a kitten! ;D  I'd hate to tell you how much I ended up paying for the whole lot, of which included a some other really nice items... suffice to say, I made my almost all of my money back after selling the FM-2.  Not long after, a newer, Ai version of this lens turned up at a thrift store, then yet another... just three weeks ago another FM-2 with more "assorted-lenses-not-sure-if-they're-any-good" kind of deal out in the middle of nowhere... yes that make three in the space of three months!  The major metro areas are great for cool used photo stuff, but I've had just as much success finding rare and interesting items out in the pucker-brush! ;D  But yes M5, this particular lens is somewhat uncommon.  It's the earliest version, and has a thoriated lens element(s).  It's characteristics are virtually identical to the two newer ones I acquired though.  Perhaps a bit of difference in the handling of color, as it has yellowed a bit due to the radioactive glass... but AWB evens things out almost so the difference in almost imperceptible.
