Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 Non AI Lens *****
« on: September 07, 2010, 09:27:56 PM »
Got a Nikon to M 4/3 adapter just for this lens. It's beautifully constructed and makes nearly every photograph appear as though it was a still in a movie.

Here's a sample of a shot I took on the street in Chinatown NY with it. It was almost completely dark out. Shot at 1000 ISO. F/1.4 (SHOT ON E-P1 BODY)

Here's a shot of an accident earlier that day:

Some negative exposure compensation would be nice. Is the lens always so soft, it it is just glare around contrasty areas?

Well I'm shooting wide open at f/1.4 in both shots and I have a UV filter on it also. I think the floating light artifacts are a result of the filter reflecting off the lens. I'd say it's a pretty sharp lens around f/2 and up. Doesn't bother me though. I got lucky and scored this lens for $30 so I'm completely happy with the results.

I'll take the filter off sometime and try shooting then to see if I'm still getting a lot of glare. But like I said before...I'm almost positive it's from the filter.

Do remove the filter. You don't need one on a digital body!

I have just bought a UV filter for my panasonic 20mm pancake.  Is there a problem with them?  It's on there for protection.

Cheers

No problem at all man. Sometimes if you're looking at direct light though you'll get a reflection. If that's the case you can always temp remove it. Lenses are expensive so I think having a filter on it to protect it is a smart thing.

I have the same lens and have difficulty getting consistent, accurate, focus while shooting wide open. Do you encounter that issue? Do you have any suggestions for workarounds? It's a beautiful lens for portraits but the focus issue is certainly a problem.

Hi,
So, using the Olympus PEN E-P1/2 or E-PL1, and a Nikkor adapter, you dont actually need the lens to be an AI lens? The F mount would work fine? Is that true?
Thanks for info

Wow, sorry for leaving these questions unanswered for so long!

Davidfhorton - I definitely use the zoom focus when focusing with my E-P1. I've never had a problem using it. Remember, you can move the box around to focus in on certain points, you don't always have to focus to the center.

senirupa - That's correct. Any F mount Nikon should work fine with an F Mount adapter. Since the Olympus Meters through the lens it doesn't matter what the version is.

I have not used manual focus before and it was tricky taking the shot above of my kid. I frame the scene, decide where I want the focus to be, use the focus zoom and manual focus until the spot is in focus, then undo focus zoom and re-check the framing and then take the shot.

It takes about 10 seconds and she can move a bit in that time usually not much. I think I took about 5 or 6 shots and two of them had perfect focus on the eyelashes and the rest had acceptable focus - this at f/1.4 mind you.

However, I find that at this distance (less than 1 meter) I can get an acceptabel focus just be looking at the live view without focus zoom and focusing a bit back and forth.

It doesn't change any color or exposure

It will effect distant views like Voyager does of the GGB, it reduces the atmospheric haze that can degrade IQ detail and contrast..
But, on costly lenses, or any lens, it acts as good protection. The Multi-Coated on all surfaces are the better ones.

I found one today at a real bargain,  it was half price day at the thrift store.  It looks like new.

A hood offers better protection. I never use a UV or Skylight filter since they degrade image quality..

Hoods are good for bumps and such, but a filter can protect from air born dirt and such. On busy streets, that is a very real possibility. Getting a Optical Quality Ground filter with multi-coating is a good investment. they are in the $40-100 range, depending on brand. I like B&W brand
