Leica Summicron-R 35mm f/2 Lens Samples *****
« on: February 26, 2012, 08:04:56 PM »
Hello.

I would like to share a couple pictures that I took with my E-P1.  I purchased it recently when Best Buy had a sale on the body.  I am very happy with the IQ of the camera/lens combo.

First the camera setup (sorry, taken by my cellphone)

Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, PA (ISO800, f/2, iPhoto)

Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, NJ (ISO800, f/2, iPhoto)

Enjoy.

Hey guys new here and I actually own an Olympus e410. Want but cannot afford the new OM D not to mention if I could I would have to wait. I'm just about ready to upgrade though to the MFT camera. Anyway I think Best Buy still has that one you mention.

Thank you guys.

The lens - believe it or not - was a hand me down so I got lucky there...

I used to put the Leica lens on Canon 20D.  The dark and tiny optical view finder made it really hard for me to focus manually.  I even installed a split image focus screen but it didn't help that much either.

Mounting the Leica lens on the E-P1 turned out to be a match made in heaven.  Granted the LCD screen on the E-P1 is not a high resolution one, it still made manual focusing much, much easier.  Being able to view the DOF "live" is just another bonus of using the E-P1 or any other mirrorless camera.

I did consider other make, such as Sony and Panasonic ones.  But in the end, it was the Best Buy deal and a couple Best Buy gift cards that I had received during the Christmas that "pushed" me towards the E-P1.  So far I'm very happy with it and plan to stick with the M43 platform for a while.  In fact I have already started selling off my other camera equipments (Canon and Sigma) in order to keep my wife happy...   :D

I have always liked the 35mm 'Cron. Back in Time, In the 80's. I bought a Leica M5 2lug, with a 35mm Cron (Watzlar, not ASPH), a lovely lens at any f/stop. (I traded a Canon F1 with about 4 or 5 lenses and still owed cash  ;D)

Anyway, A great lens, and really nice family stuff also.

Here are some more pictures.

I work in NYC and rarely have anytime to enjoy what the city has to offer.  I decided to be a tourist and spent 3 hours walking around Midtown yesterday.  It's interesting how your perspective changes when you just slow down a bit and look around (and up).

Times Square

Bryant Park

NYC Public Library

Grand Central Station

Midtown

Enjoy.

Anyone knows how this lens compares to the M4/3 Pana Leica 25mm 1.4 ASPH ?
Do they play in the same league or is there a huge difference ?

You have a good eye and frame things well making good use of the lens' width. I love your rendition of Atlas!

Thank you very much for your compliment.

I have to give some credit to E-P1 though.  I was using the same Leica lens on a Canon 20D and had to work really hard to get the shot just right.  Composing and framing on E-P1 is sooo much easier (on the eyes) than looking through (usually darkened) optical viewfinder in 20D.  E-P1's live view allows me to focus more on the shot rather than fussing over the camera.

Absolutely agree about framing with the E-P1's LCD: you are closer to the Barnack RF experience; moving from range finder to viewfinder your eye gains  the freedom of seeing the surroundings rather than seeing the world exclusively through a viewfinder's frame. Just don't try the E-P1 with a lens too far over 50mm; in my experience when you go long, focusing on the screen becomes a real chore.

It's great to hear that you like the E-P1. There are many real fans of the camera on this site.

That is a interesting take on using an LCD, But, the LTM's did not have that extra space, except the IIIG I think.
BUT, it is a valid observation on using the LCD. All the "M"s had that space around the VF Frame.

That lens looks so good on the Pen.

M-5, you're right about the combined rangefinder-viewfinder on the Leica M cameras; the frame for each supported lens is imbedded in a larger field of view, while the earlier Barnack cameras separated viewfinder and rangefinder in two windows and the viewfinder showed only a 50mm frame; for other lenses you attached ocular viewfinders to the camera's shoe.

What I was saying is that the larger field of view comes unwittingly in the case of the Barnack cameras when you move your eye from viewfinder to rangefinder and to your external light meter: this slows you down and makes you look around--giving you a chance at improvisation, a last second adjustment. By contrast, the more complete the viewfinder the more you will rely on it. A fully complete viewfinder tends to draw you into its frame. Check out the recent review of the Fuji X-Pro 1 camera posted by Lisandra. http://e-p1.net/other-cameras/fuji-pro-x-versus-leica-m9/  The reviewer tells us that "the Fuji viewfinder is brilliant. I like the way you never have to remove your eye from the viewfinder when fiddling about with the settings."

Back to my original point: The more complete the viewfinder the more the viewfinder frames the world for you. When shooting with an E-P1 you are certain that that will not happen.  ;D Weakness becomes a virtue . . .  :D
