Konica Hexanon AR 40mm f/1.8 (AR Mount) Lens Samples *****
« on: February 06, 2010, 06:34:40 PM »
The lens was harvested from an auction bid.
The first owner sold it to me at a very affordable price.
I did not have a competitor for the bid, not due to it being unattractive, I believe.
The seller placed it in "Film Camera" category rather than in the "Lens" category.

The lens is very well built.
It's supposed to be a budget lens bundled with Konica Autoreflex camera by then.
It's a "pancake" lens per se.
As an adapter is needed, the lens becomes a little more than 2 inches to be used with PEN.
There is no half-stop click at the aperture ring.
Apertures range from f/1.8 to f/22
Minimal focusing distance is 0.45 meter
6 aperture blades construction

Lens on E-P2
The red mark of "40/1.8" is pleasingly eye-catching

I took it for a hiking trip yesterday morning and then spent a leisure afternoon in a park.

Ma Wan residential area for local people
f/5.6 - 1/160 sec - ISO 200

Ma Wan Park
f/4 - 1/125 sec - ISO 200 (-0.7EV)

Dried seafood sold by local fish people in Ma Wan
f/2.8 - 1/80 sec - ISO 250 (-0.3EV)

Bloomed crops of bell-flowers I saw in Sai Kung
f/1.8 - 1/1000 sec - ISO 200 (-0.7EV)

f/4 - 1/250 sec - ISO 200 (-0.7EV)

I picked up one of these in a bundle with some other stuff. I never have gotten an adapter so that I can use it. I may have to pick one up and try it out!

Gareth, all nice photos.  I wish I could get a cheap one likethat.  BTW, I like your Ma Wan photo.  What a big change.  I led a youth group to build a cement path in that "village" in 1966.  What a change.  we had to take a sampan to get there then.

Hi SH,

The houses you see in the photos were built several years ago. The fishing village where you helped building paths was deserted but can still be seen now. The following pictures were taken in Ma Wan Village in 2008. I'm afraid these may be demolished some day to make way for residential development projects. Lots of changes in cityscape and landscape in Hong Kong, you are right.

(Taken with Canon 40D / EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM)

Gareth,  Thanks for all the photos.  It sure brought back memories.  The pier is exactly what it looked like 40 years ago.  Our ferry (sampan) parked there for us to land.  I left HK 40 years ago and am now living in Canada.  Thanks for the memories.

Stephen.

Thanks for the photos, they were very nice to peruse.

I was also interested in this lens because it's a pancake, too bad the adapter necessarily extends the barrel. But the lens is very inexpensive, which is nice. I guess it's the 'old school' Panasonic 20mm f/1.7, at least on a film body... ;)

Thanks.  I think the 50mm 1.7 is sharper but this lens is pretty good.  Here is a long shot.

As restful as ever - I do love your sensitivity to colour, much lighter and more delicate than I can ever manage.

Beautiful.

Hexanon 40/1.8
« Reply #16 on: January 15, 2011, 05:46:13 PM »
Picked up a Konica Hexanon 40/1.8 today.  It's pretty tiny (it is a pancake after all), and with my Konica to m4/3 adapter, it actually is only slightly longer than my CV 40/1.4 Nokton with adapter (though much wider).  Optically it's got a soft glow with reduced contrast and average sharpness wide open, though that's not necessarily a bad thing..it's a very unique rendering, and I think I might use it for this look when I need it.  Stopped down to f/2.8 (the first click), it sharpens up considerably, and loses almost all of the glow.  By f/4 and f/5.6, the thing is just razor sharp with tons of contrast.  Should be interesting as I test further.  I think f/1.8 will only be suitable for portraits and softfocus-like closeups, but it could be a very flattering lens to use for portraiture. I also quite like being able to focus closer than 0.7m, which I can't do with my 40/1.4.

Now just waiting (excitedly) for my Konica 57/1.2 to arrive!

Three shots from the Hexanon 40/1.8, first two are wide open, the third I think is wide open, but it's a little sharper than the others so it might have been at f/2.8...can't remember.  Anyway, really beautiful rendering, IMO:

Those are nice,
I had one with an FS-1 I had many years ago. It was the "Kit" lens of the day for Konica..
It draw nice doesn't it.
I may get another one, although I have a Zeiss 50mm f/1.5 C-Sonnar that draws real nice too. A bit bigger though.
The colors are super duper man  ;D

Lovely pictures Jman!

the 40mm f1.8 is a great lens and I have it almost permanently on my G1 at the moment (probably the shortest adapted SLR lens I have, as you point out)

Just recovering from repairing the diaphragm on a KH 50mm f1.4 this evening - not a recommended course of action if you value your sanity......

Excellent portraits Jordan.
Concur with your analysis of the characters of this lens.
Perhaps voyage can combine the thread to the Lens Sample Archives thread for this interesting lens.

IVE BEEN FOND OF KONICA GLASS FOR A WHILE AND INTEND TO EVENTUALLY BUY THIS LENS
oops :-[
caps.... my 58 1.2 konica has some glow which was reduced by using a baffle made of flat painted cardboard in the adapter... even so what little glow i see at times seems pleasant and add character, until it dissapears thru stopping down

very nice shots btw

Does the vignette come from the baffle?
