FishEye Converstion Lenses *****
« on: May 26, 2010, 03:02:14 PM »
Samigon "Auxiliary Lens" with a 0.16 x factor, used here on a 50mm/2 Nikkor with a plain RJ adapter ring. A near-circular image is obtained with a 35mm lens*, but I will test that outdoors with plenty of light. This is the kind of cheap Japanese glass leggy insects (or arachnids) should love to balance on.

*Note: With a 24 mm lens, the image circle is too small for comfort.

er... thanks. meanwhile I tested the Samigon with a 35mm/2.5 Serie E Nikkor (prime lens at full aperture, auxiliary lens stopped down to f:8, 100 ASA, overcast day) leaving the standard 3/4 image aspect ratio. Macro focusing is critical and peripheral sharpness inexistent. I didn't bother to check the focal length (should it be 8 mm?) in the IS settings menu -- I've only had the EP-1 since last night after all. Next I'll do a shingle wall test at the back of the house, weather permitting.

This all glass-and-metal contraption from the psychedelic Seventies (about 280 g with its screw-on conical cap) should only be coupled to a legacy lens – certainly not to a m43 kit zoom. Mine came with a rather thick proprietary 52 mm adapter ring (with the markings on the wrong side). The knurled ring gives an indication of the system's working aperture depending on the focal length of the prime lens used; here, for instance, the maximum aperture is f:4 for a 35 mm lens. Most of the time, one doesn't have to focus the prime lens away from the infinity mark, but this may be complicated by some legacy lens/m43 adapter rings which err on the safe side, so to speak, and focus a weeny bit past infinity.

I love that keyboard photo, usually it's hard to find practical uses for fisheye lenses.
