Industar-22 50mm f/3.5 *****
« on: March 21, 2010, 03:35:31 PM »
One of the postwar soviet M39 Leica copies. It has a nice steampunk look to it!  Sharp at f/3.5, but has serious problems with flare, so it is a nice conversation piece at best.  Sorry for the crappy pictures of the camera, the iphone sucks.

The lens is more or less sharp at f/3.5 at infinity.

Lens with e-pl1

Two photos at f/3.5.  Not going for quality here...

The lens is called Industar-22 50mm f/3.5. It's of Leica Thread Mount (LTM). I acquired it several weeks ago.

It came with a nice hard plastic shell and matching lens cap.

The lens can be collapsed.

It's an inexpensive old-school-look lens I can have to use on m4/3 PEN.

I have not taken many photos with the lens yet. However, I did not find troublesome flares in indoor shots. The following is one of them.

f/4 - 1/50 sec - ISO 1250

As the front elements of the lens are very forefront and the lens seems uncoated, I do expect len flares in strong daylight. The seller of the lens gave me a matching (and interesting) lens hood. I'll post some photos later on (don't know when though.  :P ) to let you have an idea how the hood looks like and how the lens performs in daylight.

P.S. @Mike
What iPhone model did you use. iPhone 3G/3Gs have short focusing distance and its focusing mechanism is quite nice. Perhaps you can get some steady support for the shot.

gareth,

Looks like we have different lenses.  Mine is missing the "Industar-22" marking.  It just has the 1:3,5, "FED" Cyrillic logo, and F=50mm and the aperture markings around the front ring.  I've been actually trying to figure out what the lens is based on the info on wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FED_%28camera%29#FED_1_serial_numbers_and_production_numbers

So far as I can tell it was made after 1949.  I believe mine is a copy of the Leitz Elmar and yours is a copy of the Tessar.

I have an iphone 3g.  I've never had luck with the close focus.  I should pull out the SLR for the lens shots.  Sorry for the blurrycam.

Cheers,
--Mike

Thanks Mike.

I did a search to find more information. Don't know if your lenses should be "FED-50" referred in this article.

Interesting bit of history. :)

I'm wondering....can the lenses actually be collapsed when mounted to the E-P1/P2..etc?
Because I figure the sensor is probably too close to actually push it back. Is it?

The sensor is at the same distance at which film is in the original RF camera. Otherwise it would not have either infinity of close focus. A problem may however arise when touching the electrical contacts on the m4/3 lens mount, or any other in-camera objects around the sensor. You should anyway proceed with caution.
