put a filter on it and protect the rear element and using 0000[4 zero] steel wool or bronze wool with a drop of mineral oil can polish your lens barrel to great beauty , with care it can be done without negatively affecting the engraving

follow with a good cleaning , ive made several russian lenses look fantastic method , even better is a 2000 or 4000 grit polishing pad or agent they can be used with water and last a long time when used with a sanding lubricant

these are extremely fine abrasives , but keep them away from the glass of course

Steel wool eh? Is that what you do to shine these lenses up? Anything else used? I have a lens I'd like to clean too.

you did that in a minute ? try for 30 and if youare really creativeyou can 'heal the deeper scratches or at least hgreatly reduce their size \visual impact

this is done with a burnishing from the world of printmaking , dont have a burnisher?
use a small spoon and gently rub the offending scratches to press them down and "fill the little trough" , which magnified ,is all a scrathch really is......  the raised metal around the rim of a scratch can be coaxed to act as a" filler" as it is press down with the back of the spoon or similar tool  also 1000 grit or finer black waterproof sandpaper which is extremely fine can be used with a bit of waterto bring to most atrocious metal serface back to new condition, after burnishing the deep scratches

this method is less useful on plated surfaces  but the nickel and white brass of the lens barrels respond well to this treatment  finish with a little steel wool [4 zero] and baby oil ]mineral oil] clean with alcohol  and tissue when done :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

I guess it took about 10 minutes or so to get a roughly good result.
It's a little tricky to clean up the narrow area between the aperture and the focus cylinder.

I'll try some more of your clever advices, thx a lot :)

tease the steel wool into a strand as narrow as you can and twist ita little to keep it strong , use the stand like floss to get the crevices clean then use a similar method to clean the bkacl residue off ,

yes................. you need 3 hands for this
