CCTV lens (Fujian China) 35mm f/1.7 (C-mount) Lens Samples *****
« on: February 01, 2010, 08:36:54 PM »
This China-made CCTV is sold locally in street / bidding sites at around USD 32.
The apertures range from f/1.7 to f/16 without clickable stops.
Minimal focusing distance - 30cm

The lens on E-P2

I tried on it on a fine day a while ago in early January.
The pictures below were cropped to square format from 4:3 originals.
Unlike its 25mm brother, the lens does not have vignetting at 4 corners.
The cropping was done only for concentrating on the subjects and for compositions.

Li Ka Shing Tower, Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU)
1/200 sec - ISO 200 (No aperture info. I didn't have a consistent habit to record f-stop by then)

Apples of donation, HKPU
1/100 sec - ISO 640

Student's lockers (HKPU)
1/320 sec - ISO 200

Pebbles
1/800 sec - ISO 200 (+0.7EV)

I took the following photo in an early morning with diffuse sunlight coming through the window panes of my reading room. I can tell the aperture of this photo because the 35mm lens was at its wide open to take a photo of its smaller brother. :)
f1.7 - 1/40 sec - ISO 1250

Surprisingly sharp for such a cheap lens!
As far as I know, c-mount is for 16mm film with smaller image area,
so vignetting usually occurs on m4/3 sensors, does it not?
Is this a specially designed lens for big sensor sizes, or it just happens to have a larger image circle?
Can you please post uncropped images and images with accent on bokeh?
The one I found on the net is not so nice:

Hi Adash.
The uncropped 4:3 JPEG 1024 pixel width of the first picture:

I cannot see vignetting for all the photos I took.

Will try bokeh later on.

@adash
Tried wide open and bokeh. The day was dull and the sky was cloudy at ~5PM

f/1.7 - 1/125 sec - ISO 200 (-0.3EV)

Same place
f/5.6 - 1/60 sec - ISO 1250 (-0.3EV)

Other wide open shots:
f/1.7 - 1/80 sec - ISO 200 (-0.3EV)

f/1.7 - 1/100 sec - ISO 200 (+0.3EV)

I bought from this seller in Hong Kong:
http://bit.ly/bvI5FA

I searched eBay and found this offer, the lens looks the same as mine.
The seller is also from Hong Kong.
The picture link by adash is also from this source.

Disclosure:
No conflict of interest. I do not know both sellers.

Thank you very much, Gareth!
This little thingy seems to perform almost as well as big OM glass, for example.
Can you, please, do something else for me - post a 100% crop around an area you consider most contrast in first two images. Aroung the left edge of the sharpest leaf, roughly the same arrea and no more than 600px each dimension.

The bokeh in some of these images is a bit distracting and ugly for my tastes, but to each his own.

Yes. I also feel that the bokeh are harsh and haphazard. :)
They're no match with some dreamy, creamy, melancholy bokeh created by the pricey, legendary lenses. No match for the price either. :)
Having said, the somewhat "weird" bokeh can be a character of this particular lens, which may be relevant in some particular photographic subjects. No one can tell if I would meet with this "subject" tomorrow. :)

Personally i love crazy weird bokeh (especially in the lawn-sprinkler photo) - it becomes a focal point in its own right :)

I've bought one of these on eBay (very fast delivery - less than a week) and I'm just waiting on the c-mount adapter (not so fast delivery - 4 weeks as of today ??? ).

Thanks for the pictures and information, after looking at your pictures... I'm getting so excited at the thought of getting my lens on my Pen.

Mike

PS. Think I may get the 25mm f1.4 too
I can't get my FP4 into my E-P1

The image is sharp and no vignetting but the bokeh is absolutely vile.

ok im going out on a limb here, but ive gone back to look at the bokeh again and you know what? they looks like beautifully abstract patterns a bit.... with linear elements splaying out in random patterns , it anit the bokeh of a good leica lens , but it has a certain quirky  look im not ready to dismiss because it does not conform to accepted wisdom,

for 35 bucks , its starting to look good!

Don't give PeterB a hard time. From an optical stand point, the Bokeh is bad--just like a Holga lens is not sharp. But that does not mean it is not pleasing nor desirable.

Yeah, be nice!

Not like he would though.

But I might.

Look on the plus side for the lens, it is very cheap, looks very sharp and no vignetting. What a great combo.

Just keep everything in focus because the bokeh is so busy it is distracting. Good bokeh adds to an image; the multi-lined out of focus confusion in those grass shots is far from being pleasant.

By the way, I was referring to the lens image, not any particular person.  ;)  :-*

Hi everybody!

I'm just getting started wth my E-P1 (got it second hand 2 weeks ago with both kit lenses).
Yesterday I bought a security camera frm  flea market (norma VC 563 with a molynx tv lens 8mm F1:1.3. Pretty sweet :)
But! There's one problem since I don't have a c mount adapter and I think it won't fit on it because the near thread diameter of the lens is a wee bit more than 37,2mm. (a little less than 38mm)

pictures: (sorry for the crappy quality, I don't have my e-p1 here with me ;)

Are there any c mount adapter that allow me to use this lens with focus to infinity? And everything else ... ?

Thanks!
