Carl Zeiss 85mm/f2.8 Sonnar T* Samples *****
« on: July 04, 2011, 03:04:15 AM »
Some photos of the lens itself, - mounted on Oly's E-P2 via C/Y→MFT adapter , front view & vertical view (from side):

A couple of samples from this Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* [85mm/f2.8]:

Oly E-P1 & Carl Zeiss 85mm/f2.8 Sonnar @ 1/200 - f4.0 - ISO200 (Supported, but not on tripod).

Oly E-P1 & Carl Zeiss 85mm/f2.8 Sonnar @ 1/125 - f5.6 - ISO200 (Supported, but not on tripod).

Not sure if this lens is already represented in the forum's Lens Archive.  If not, I guess admin's are taking care of that.

kind regards

The 85 Sonnar is a true gem of a lens.  I don't use mine all that often, as I also have the Rokinon 85/1.4, and when I grab an 85 prime on m4/3, I tend to want speed as well, but I just have a hard time selling it.  I've owned mine for about 3 years, and used it a lot on my Canon DSLRs, and a little bit on m4/3.  It's a nearly perfect lens.  Pin sharp from wide open, corner to corner, and absolutely fabulous color and contrast.

Here's a shot with mine on the GH2, wide open:

100% crop:

And one of my favorites with the lens from my Canon days.  This is wide open on a Canon 30D:

it is really a beautiful lens , and has a wonderful render
and soothing bokeh

it reminds me of my
contax g 90 2.8 sonnar [carl zeiss T*] inmany ways
even its look from the front

thats a classy adapter you got there ;)

@M5-User, Jman & cosinaphile: Thanks for your add-on's here.  I've just had the lens for a couple of days, so I have almost zero experience with this one.  However, I've owned a same type 50mm/f1.7 for 35+ years, and I for sure can recommend that one for all 'normal lens' lovers.  Also good experience with the 50mm/f1.4 version, - from my uncle's lens collection. Hope this one will come out as well.

Yes, it is a bit slow at 2.8, - but i don't expect to shoot with this glass in very low light situations.  I happen to own a very fast Canon, the EF85mm/f1.2Lmk2, - but I never tried it on the MFT houses, - I don't even own a EF→MFT adapter.  Maybe I should try it, though?  Btw, the three 'lens portraits' on top here are from that piece of 'heavy glass'.

Here's from a forum thread at a web site I frequents when I have some bucks burning hole in my pockets:

            Contax Sonnar 85/2.8
Currently my favorite portrait lens, this one is small, light, super-sharp and uber-contrasty at all (and I mean - all) apertures. Its contrast is simply amazing - I have not seen
another lens with such a high contrast. Extremely pleasing Sonnar rendering at f/2.8 and f/4 (I rarely shoot at other apertures). Can't praise it high enough. Highly recommended.

Yeah, the sonnar is about as good as it gets from f/2.8 and smaller.  You can't use the 85L on m4/3, as it is a focus-by-wire design, and without power to the lens, you can't focus it.  I do use a Rokinon 85/1.4 on m4/3 and it works pretty well.
