Canon FL 50mm f/1.4 Samples *****
« on: December 15, 2011, 02:58:26 PM »
OK, Got my Canon FL back back from an Overhaul, some cleaning, some replacement parts...

This is an earlier version (6 Elements, not 8. as in the FL MkII and FD)
And is NOT SSC, (witch has 3 coatings), FL and LTM lenses had 2 coatings.

So it has a tad less contrast, (Good for B&W conversions), and a tad soft at f/1.4 beyond 25 feet are so... BUT, for a 1/2 length portrait lens and closer.... SHARP at f/1.4

f/5.6

My lens is a B&W ONLY lens until I can figure out how to get good colors with it...I may need to use JPG mode for this, even boosting the in camera saturation didn't seem to help much....  ???

Most at f/5.6 or so, except the outside cafe back of the chair... f/1.4 for that, about 5 feet away

Great photos m5. I remember we were having a brief discussion on how the fl connects to fd as well which is great. One thing I was wondering however is how you said you were using different apertures on the lens. Why exactly were you? Does it actually make a difference? I'm still a beginner nd I only saw on my fd 50mm that it seems to make the images darker and not much aid, also increased the noise. I usually leave it on 1.8 which is it's first f stop, yes my adapter has an aperture lock/opener. Ive experimented and the shots became worse as I increased the aperture...

all the Manual Focus lenses has an f/stop ring to change the f/#.... like using the wheel on the Pens or Pannys.... BUT, it stops down to real opening as you change it... The Pannys have an "Auto-Gain" on the illumination level of the EVF and LCD, so closing down has little effect on the brightness in the VF's...It dosn't effect grain in the image, but, it does effect the look on the LCD of EVF. It won't be recorded though. it

The FL and FD Breech Lock are the same..... BUT, the FD lenses has 2 more controls that the FD cameras access to allow Wide Open metering with an internal pin that tells the meter what f/stop you have the f/stop ring set at, and the other pin (lever) is moved to the pre-set f/stop AT the time of exposure, then released after the exposure... Same principle as the instant return mirror... back in the 40/50's, mirror stayed UP until you wound the advance knob.   The older lenses have a Manual/Auto switch.

You meter in Manual mode (the lens will stop down at the f/stop you choose)....Then switch to Automatic mode to focus and shoot.... The lens will be wide open, but will close down when you take the picture... and open back up after the picture is taken.  The FD series made that an automatic, internal function... a great step forward.

Here are 2 photos, one in B&W, and one on Color

I could boost the saturation, but, it was very dreary day, and the color reflects what I saw....

--------------------------------------------

The lens just doesn't have POP for Color, which is OK, I have a 55mm Mirco Nikkor for that FL, But it is not f/1.4, only f/3.5.

I think, because I see some fungus after markings I can see when I hold it to a bright light, the coating was pretty much eaten up -- literally -- So, it is a un-coated lens for all practical uses.... great for B&W.. sans the lack of contrast in the initial files. Although, it does make an interesting muted color effect with right subjects...

its almost as if that lens mimics a low color film like a softer astia or something , it does not bother me as saturation can be added in post , meanwhile you have the makings of an excellent portrait lens of 100mm fov and muted color , which sounds eminantly useable in many a circumstance, ill bet in the right light it renders a beautiful ,low color portrait in your hands

Yes, I do have to try some Color Portraits with this one, The IQ and how it draws is really classic and wonderful.  I think the FD versions (and Ver II of my lens) will add too much contrast and color for what I want in this lens... It is a bit of a challenge though in Post, to bring it all up to par... but, I getting the workflow down a bit better now...But, the results are worth the few extra minutes of thinking what I need to correct the image to have a great image...
