Thanks folks.

The FD version, sorry about that. I should have stated FD. The EF version we wouldn't be able to set the F/stop. Only ever used it on a tripod and thats a must really. Weighs in at close to 2.5kg. I see someone had the 400mm FD 2.8L. I'm trying to find one ;)

Only been trying the birds for about 2 months so its all new to me as well, you are not alone :). Interesting exercise.

So yes, the FD version,

Danny.

PS: Changed the descirptions to "FD"

Off memory Canon never made a 400mm FD F/5.6 L. They did make a beautiful 400mm FD F4.5 though. Thats tempting if one comes up.

Must remember that these are manual focus and no IS. FD mount only. Sigma made a great 400 5.6 APO and Vivitar made a good one as well. Again though, I'm talking about the FD mount and not the EF EOS mount.

Update on the Canon 400mm F/4.5. Warned elsewhere that it does produce a problem with CA. The advice comes from someone that has tried it so its good advice to stay clear of that lens.

All the best folks and thanks for the heads up from elsewhere ;)

Danny.
