Tamron 4-12mm F1.2 zoom lens Samples *****
« on: August 19, 2011, 07:31:59 PM »
4-12mm Tamron 1.2 on GH2 Lumix

4-12mm wide zoom 1.2 f stop on a GH2 (video needs ETC mode, photo needs a cropping to 8-12mp range)

But fun little project since wide lenses that fast are non existent outside C Mounts.

It will vignette on a cam other than a GH2, but a fun "toy" lens none the less and you still can get 8MP out of a Pen most likely give or take. Video you really need the ETC mode on a GH2.  But a very fun macro lens too.

It looks fun but I you would get tired of it very quickly after the novelty wears off.

BTW, I had a Bauer 8mm cine camera with a 6.5x zoom with a f/1.2 maximum aperture and that was pretty typical of the mid-range cine cameras in the late 70s and early 80s (before they got killed off by video).

A novelty for photo yes, but for video much bigger payoff.  Just not a lens in existence that wide and fast esp. for m4/3

What a great idea! Would you mind if I put this in the Lens Sample Photo Archive?

How much does the lens cost? What mount does it use? (Maybe it's discussed in the video which did not play beyond the first minute or so).

It is in the video. If you didn't make it through to the cost then the lens isn't for you.

Everything's in the vid , but $90 (manual iris 1.2 4-12mm tamron) just google that but I got mine at B&H.  C Mount to m4/3 adapter needed and you have to shave the lens/mount since c mount adapters are built for film lenses not CCTV lenses.

Keep in mind it will vignette on a PEN for video since there's no ETC mode like the GH2, but you can still crop the vignette off of photos and wind up with 8mp I'm guessing on a Pen and probably 12 ish on a GH2/G3

Would a teleconverter save the day with the vignette? It will convert it to a less impressive 8-24 ~F/2.2 but should also solve the vignetting problem. That is of course an assumption, provided that teleconverters in C-mount exist and they don't interfere with the lens' rear element.

Not sure for this lens in particular, but I've heard someone on DVX user say they solved a similar problem with another lens using a teleconverter, so most likely, there is something you can do along those lines.  Though most c mount lenses vignette much less at the telephoto end, so my ASSUMPTION, is that it would still vignette at the wide end and clear up halfway through.

This depends which sensor size it was made for. CCTV has different sensor sizes, and the C-mount standard does not mandate that it will use one or another. You should check the lens specification.

Yes covered that in the vid, you want a C Mount lens that's at least a 1/2 inch for etc mode on a GH2.  m4/3 (which this lens is made for).
