Book design - VOTING IS NOW CLOSED

This thread shall act as a place for members of E-P1.net to share ideas for the book, help plan the overall design, and give input on drafts of the book.

The book might be organized by subject, photographer, camera, region or some other theme but the real meat of it is the community. Ways to tie the book together might include a short bio for each photographer and a forum quote, as well as a brief description of the photo: location, date, basic camera and lens data (could be in an appendix) and a narrative if appropriate.

Some of the challenges will include balancing the coverage among photographers and restricting photos to MFT. Definitely will need a strong editorial hand and community participation.

Definitely restricting photos to Micro Four Thirds.

Photographer profiles on one side of a two page spread for each contributor?

Themes?

love it to death. Could be half page for profile and the rest for photos
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

Definitely restricting photos to Micro Four Thirds.
Meaning the camera body I assume. The lens could be anything. Rather arbitrary in some cases; e.g., the E-P1 shares more with the E-5 than it does with the GH2, although the E-5 and GH2 are more similar in use.

Photographer profiles on one side of a two page spread for each contributor?
A sidebar might work for the profile (one column of a multi-column grid).

Themes?
Themes may emerge when the photos are collected.

For themes, how about the basics:

Portrait
Candid/Street
Sports
Event
Wildlife
Pets
Landscape
Cityscape
B&W
Flora
Transportation

Etc.

I like the themes idea, but is there any way we can make it more unique? Revolve around members instead of objects?

Then you are looking into doing a photographer profile with a small gallery of work.  This would involve running a contest of some some sort, to determine who gets the "E-P1.net Book Profile", because there are a lot of members here and we all cannot fit into a reasonable sized book.

Yes, the themes may seem less personal, but it allows for more participation and a greater variety of images.  The themes can be personalized by the blurb about the photographer.

Even then, with limited space... with a members profile, it still seems like some sort of contest will be needed....
even if we just give the member a credit line under the photo.....

Why not a picture contest. The best 100 or so go into the book.
Under every picture can be put some info like name of photographer, camera, lens, location....

That could work. We should assume that not a lot of people are going to be active and take the time to be included in the book though (and be surprised when more than you expect do).

good point, who's gonna determine who's gonna be in the book and who's not? How bout a mix of both ideas? A gallery of themes and then a showcase of some of the most prominent (or whatever basis is used) members?

Well, that is where we can set up sepetate contests for each theme, and have members vote on, let's say, the top 25 images in each theme.

If Voyager can set up a "thanks" option for each post, that would work. Another photo forum uses that as regular feature on all the posts. Then we hit the "thanks" button or photos we would like to see in the book.
The photos with the top 25 "thanks" get in.

Let's see how the "Best Of 2011" goes..

It could be a model to use...

I think a POLL at the top of the voting thread may be a good way to vote... IF, we can transfer the images w/o the photographer being known, into a "Voting" thread.. and we all vote on the top 10 photo's in each category... (assuming there are 10 category's, per my example)

That means, we would have 10 "Voting" threads... One for each category.... for example.

and then we pick the top ten images from each categories and viola, 100 images. Now, what would thw categories be? I got landscape, night, portrait, architecture, macro, street/journalism, work?, flower?, seascape? Automotive?

Those are good ones...

Let's see if we can get a few replies to OK them and/or have other suggestions...

Then I can make a poll on all the suggestions, and we can vote for the top 10 categories we want to include in the book.

The winner of the contest should be featured in the book, that's a good idea.

More Category suggestions?
Suggestions so far mix subjects and styles which is confusing.

A simple subject list might be: nature, places, things, events, people.

A more complicated list:
Architecture
Fashion-Glamour
Fine art
Food
Landscape
Nature
Photojournalism
Portrait
Sky
Sports
Still life
Travel
Underwater
Wedding
Wildlife
E-3/5, E-P1, GH2
