Thousands march in Poland over Acta internet treaty

More than 10,000 people have taken to Poland's streets to protest the signing of an international treaty activists say amounts to internet censorship.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk says his government will on Thursday sign the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement.

The treaty, known as Acta, aims to establish international standards to enforce intellectual property rights.

But critics say it could curb freedom of expression, and government websites have been hacked in protest.

Several marches took place in cities across the nation on Wednesday, says the BBC's Adam Easton in Warsaw.

Crowds of mostly young people held banners with slogans such as "no to censorship" and "a free internet".

After convening a special government meeting to discuss the issue, Mr Tusk said the government would not be blackmailed by the treaty's opponents.

At least people are taking a stand to this.

I am always very uneasy about government intrusion into the private sector but I am also willing to look at both sides of an issue.

The question on the table is:

1. Should intellectual property be protected? There are a lot inventors, writers, composers and yes, photographers, that have royalties is part of their income.

2. Do we really need new laws or are the existing one sufficient?

2. Do we want a free economic system? A free economic system is only possible with solid property rights and contract laws.

1. It is already protected.

2. see above.

3. Define your free economic. Where does property end and where do human rights begin?

Hi adash. It has been a while.

I am not sure about Poland but in the US the present laws are sufficient in my opinion. These issues have been put on the back-burner but may come back after the election.

Under a free economic system I understand a system where one can own property and can make enforceable contracts. Start an enterprise etc.

Human rights? What are they? The only rights I recognize are the ones that are consistent with the constitution and the laws that elected legislators have created.

By the way, I would really enjoy to see more photos of your city/country. When I left Europe you guys were still behind the mysterious iron curtain.

Hm, a border must be drawn, as if nothing is considered "human rights" then slavery can exist, and for example abuse by corporate entities is possible. So, in respect to the internet censorship, where does property protection end, and where does privacy abuse start? BTW, the freedom to exchange private messages and mail between citizens is recognized as a constitutional human right.

Well, tell me what you want to see, and I'll be happy to either take a photo of it, or search for one online (while this is still possible  :-X )

i as happy seeing the good people of Poland taking a stand against oppression , these "acts 'are thinly veiled attempt to erode human freedom and nothing else . current laws and statutes protect intellectual property rights , they simply need enforcement .... sopa is another example of the creeping fascism that is the american cancer
