The death-of-Flash
« on: February 23, 2012, 12:49:38 PM »
I admit I've been a little buried with grad school the past couple months, but in January people started telling me they no longer wanted video encoded to Flash which I thought was peculiar because a year ago we were having fights about who was going to do the Flash encoding.

This is a little dated but its interesting as hell to me:

It has to be the most popular encoding for the vast majority of pirated content on the web, and that is saying a LOT. They (adobe) may not be developing it for mobile devices anymore but it is hard to imagine it going away for quite some time.

I can see Adobe putting a Flash wrapper around HTML5 because so many applications are out there now that depend on Flash.  In particular, Flash uses Blaze to transmit data from server to webapp at faster than normal text/html transmission speeds by encoding the data in binary form and compressing it.  HTML5 just added HTMLSocket that does the same thing, but apps depend on Flash/Blaze encoding.  What will most likely happen is that a flash update will roll out that updates the server side and client side code to use HTMLSocket within Blaze, so no code has to change.  Eventually the server side flash code will transmit to the client HTML5 compliant data, so the client will no longer need flash.  Tools like dreamweaver will spit out HTML5 code instead of Flash code.  I think this actually benefits Adobe in the long run, since they can focus now on creating tools to help developers and forget about fixing issues within flash and supporting flash customers.  As a developer you have to pay to use flash, which also means Adobe has to address any complaints you might have.  That support structure is no longer needed.

It's mostly because of Apple's inability to adopt flash to its software.

I thought it was Apple's unwillingness? With a bank account like Apple's I can't imagine inability is a term they use very much.

I believe it's both. Running all the animated flash ads in a popular web page will require so much processing power that the overpriced iphone will run out of battery for a few minutes. I've been running into this problem quite often on my GF's netbook, before I installed a good flashblock plugin. I've since doubled the time it can run on battery.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like flash either because it's a closed standard, but predicting or enforcing the absolute death of a technology that thousands rely on, is just wrong.

Apple claims that flash has too many security holes.

frankly it disgusts me that the otherwise useful apple pads are crippled by the absence of sd card slots and usb , it it very telling of their "our way or the highway philosophy"

Wow, no sd card slot or usb? I didn't know that (which goes to show how much I pay attention to ipads). That would be just about useless to someone who makes a living with cameras that record to either SD cards or SSDs. I guess in Apple's vision of computing there is a Mac in another room or building that you can download your files to and then you can access wirelessly. Or maybe you are supposed to have a wireless SD card reader (wonder how long it would take to move 20gb of video on one of those). I'm actually astounded, I can even usb into my android smart phone which cost me like. . .$99. oh, wait, I get it, you are supposed to SHOOT everything with your ipad to begin with. . . ;D
