Silly-gear-of-the-week
« on: December 05, 2011, 04:23:11 PM »
As global economies continue to collapse around our collective ears there are still people out there that are evidently doing quite ok. . .or at least thats what some people selling camera gear seem to think.

This used to be a popular past-time in several forums I've lurked in through the years and its kind of fun.

My submission for this week:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ltd-100-Leica-Noctilux-M-50mm-f-1-E60-6-bit-50-F1-0-/250859310718?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item3a68614e7e

Reduced to $20,045.00!

That's actually a pretty awesome item.  Not saying I'd blow $20K on a 50mm lens, but you don't buy this lens to shoot it...you buy it in addition to your 'for use' Noctilux, and you keep it pristine in the box as a display item/investment.  $20K seems steep now, but if kept in flawless condition (I'd take it out to excercise the focus helicoid and aperture from time to time), this would probably be worth double to triple this value in 20 years.

There's another seller from Hong Kong selling it for $17.5k, which is much more reasonable...  That said, if I had many millions of dollars sitting around I might actually get an M9 and the 50 f/0.95...

and yes that box is pretty cool too, haha

I do like the humidity-controlled wooden case.

I know, its just mind boggling to me that there are more than one lists of such ridiculeness on the web...that must be that there are people who buy them!

This is only moderately silly:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Angenieux-180-2-3-APO-Nikon-Ais-1522676-/370397358920?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item563d672b48

I tested one of these back when I was still shooting F3s and F4s, I thought it was totally inferior to the Nikon 180 f2.8 edif, I was also told there is no way to take one apart if it ever needs a repair. The consistently high price on old angenieux gear makes me think that there must be a big collector-base in asia, that and Gokevin can always be counted on for over-the-top listings.

This weeks winner:

I suppose they didn't make very many of these and it was made in the 'der Vaterland" and all that. . .still, $32K?  Probably not a "user".

I suppose there is the potential of getting stuff from Germany really cheap when the Euro does its death-rattle, which should be any minute now. But I guess thats why the european dealers sell on ebay for U.S. dollars.

$29,950 obo,. There are no less than 5 (!) Noctiluxs currently listed on the bay at over $20K. It must be a Christmas thing.

Yeah, I'm not sure of the collector pressure on noctiluxs, but the fact that there are 6 or 7 on ebay probably can be taken as some indication that its not all that rare. In fact the Leica user wiki claims there were 2450 of the f1.2 scalloped focus-ring version.  If all 2450 were worth $29K the grand total would come to $71 million and change, Leica Camera AG's total equity on their last financial report was only about $87 million at the current euro exchange rate.

I actually find the prices people are asking for 35mm Summicrons every bit as obscene (probably because I can afford one but out of principle I just can't bring myself to do it since the last one I owned I sold for hell of a lot less).

its obscene because a decent 50 f1.2 doesnt cost that to make and no brand name accounts for a 20000$+ premium

Again you're putting a limit on $$.  Look at the Bugatti or Lamborghini owner....they see things as such  ;)

Just heard on the news about a Russian billionaire who got his daughter an 88 million dollar apartment for college...
You may think it's silly & obscene because you're looking at things relative to your income  :)

A poor person thinks $900 bucks for an E-P3 is silly and obscene... ;) ;) ;)

As a poor person, I do not. I see the pricing relative to the features offered. In the case of the lens, the pricing is not relative to the features offered.

I'm sure there are, but drawing an argument from how people see pricing of products from income is a bit far-fetched. Would you buy that lens if you were easily able to?

Now you understand!  :)
Quite a few Leica owners don't see things the way you do....  ;)

Would I buy that lens? Of course because if I could afford to, everything else said in this thread would be irrelevant to me  :)

$29K for an f1.2 Noctilux is a joke, they made 2400 of them.

Its not a Stradivarius or a Guarneri, it was made in a factory. I think someone could probably reverse engineer the Noctilux and build a one-off clone in China for $15K if they wanted one bad enough.

There are definitely people out there that need to complete-the-collection, but while I could justify spending the same coin on a tool for work, my own personal moral-compass identifies collecting at this end of the scale for this sort of item as silly. YMMV.
