Crap.  Not I have to learn a new OS.  At least ALL of my software vendors transferred my applications to the mac os!

what made you change camp? I can't stand MAC OS, how SIS you manage the transfers? I'll say this though, their displays are astounding.

Oh, I like the OS, it is a close of X windows that ran under Unix which was my OS love while working at Kodak!  I will manage, but there will be a learning curve!  I am actually on the new system now....  Quad core processor, 8 gig of memoir and a really nice display in a small portable 7 hour system!

Well, congrats on your purchase (not really on the dead laptop).
I think you're gonna enjoy MAC OS a lot. I would if I could afford it.

Sister, we need to start a club!

I've done about 95% of my professional work over the past 15 years on wintel systems. I know its terrible of me but I've always thought that people who complained about how difficult or inconvenient PC's are were just dumb.

I've never liked proprietary-anything, about 2 years ago I was forced by circumstances to work on a Mac FCP system and every day was like a trip to the dentists office. Once I got everything somewhat running on the Mac its power supply gave up the ghost. No problem thought I, I've built plenty of PC systems from scratch, what is a power supply? $50-$75? Once I found one in stock somewhere in North America after a day long search I was able to have it delivered to me for a mere $250 (a cute little white thing with an apple embossed on its plastic skin). If this had happened on for instance, one of the PC AVID MC workstations I worked on in my previous job I could have had the unit up and running in less than 3 hours for maybe 1/3 of the price.

Nowadays I'm so damn happy with Adobe CS5 on my home-brew I7 hot rods that I just chuckle about the kids with their jillion dollar FCP/AJA money pits.  I think I read not long ago that researchers discovered the same brain activity associated with religious ecstasy in Apple fans. . .which is pretty obvious to everyone making a living without an apple anything.

Sony vegas works just fine on an intel based windows machine, photoshop/lightroom/capture one works just fine as long as theres RAM. People still tell me I need a MAC for serious editing, maybe im missing something here, but I just dont get why. In fact, that mac display I mentioned had to be more extensively calibrated than anything pc ( mac uses gamma 1.8 for some insane reason, or so the calibration program says).

Pretty much sums up my frustration with the apple camp, and the main reason im the only person in the known universe that has never owned an ipod. If I want a song i want to copy paste it into the mp3 player and thats it. No itunes, no format change, no extra charge, no nothing.
On a mac you can preview RAW files right there on the desktop and thats cool as crap but thats about it for me.

I have never owned any apple stuff either... but, I may get an iPad 1 ONLY because their App Store has the largest selection of Apps for Autistic kids and adults. Android Market is lame in that area.,

Good luck with your new mac

Since Lisandra and I are the only two people in the world without and ipod/iphone and my cel contract recently expired; which android based smart phone should I look at?

I own NO iPhone or iPad or iMac.... so 3
I have a Droid 2 (Verizon), but there are faster and larger screen ones out there.
4G is in very limited markets, (large cities with limited area coverage)... But, all will default to 3G or lower. In about a year or so, 4G should be nation wide... maybe.

I have an EVO 4G which is great provided you get the fat battery. Fast 1ghz processor with 512 mb of RAM. And now that the EVO 3d is out (the 4G succesor) the 4G should be in the reasonable range. Or if ultimate performance is your thing (like me) the EVO 3d has a dual core 1.2 ghz processor with a chunky 1 gb of RAM. Plus a 3d camera with a built in auto stereoscopic screen that's 960 x 540 pixels.  That screen is 4.3 inches (vs tje 3.5 on the iphone).
Now that you brought it up, I might be able to tolerate MAC stuff but I absolutely no holds bar hate, within an inch of my life, the effing iPhone. The fanaticism behind this low spec phone (and the similarly low spec iPad) amazes me to no end daily.
Note: m5 user ownership and uses of his iPad are the exception.

I am a windows programmer with a Mac at home:)
OSX is a very good operating system similar to Windows.
The only downside is the price. 4 times more expensive than a similar windows system:)
But is an eyecatcher and a pleasure to use !

no seriously im sure you get your worth out of the ipad but theres just (to me) better stuff out there and some (keyword: some) people buy just because its the latest Isomething. For instance:

or versus the touch pad

I don't get the pad thing at all. I've never liked touch screens, and being a person who actually writes documents such as scripts, abstracts and papers, keyboards are a big part of my life. All the pads I see are too big to carry in your pocket and I have big enough hands that the virtual keypads I've tried on the touch screens are a joke.

It seems pretty much like the current must-have status accessory, I see little asian girls carrying them around in airports like a teddy bear. My yuppie relatives in Brasil all have to have one and they go for almost double down there.

So I guess I'm really waiting for someone to tell me why I need a pad device. Will it run PS 5.5? Can I do full resolution HD After Effects composite animations on it? I don't do facebook or twitter and I can still read email fine with my 3 year old samsung cel phone.

Android Market is small potatoes and low grade compared to what's available for the iPhone or iPad - and I speak from user knowledge of both.

Not just the variety, where iTunes smacks Google into the corner hands down, but most of the Android apps I have on my tablet are poor quality by comparison. I have a 7 inch tablet with Android and the only advantage of using it is size - in every other way my iPhone beats it to a pulp.

If Apple made a 7 inch iPad I'd happily chuck the Android in the bin.....
