Bulgarian 'Killer' Testifies about PM Borisov's Mafia Ties
« on: November 29, 2011, 12:26:16 AM »
The defendant in Bulgaria's high-profile organized crime case code-named "The Killers," Vasil Kostov AKA Ketsa (The Sneaker) spoke before magistrates about a meeting between Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, and notorious mafia figures.

The Bulgarian National Radio, BNR, informs that during an 11-hour long Court session Friday, held at the Shumen Regional Court, Ketsa had testified about meetings between Borisov, Bulgaria's organized crime boss Milcho Bonev AKA Bay Mile, and Serbian drug lord Sreten Josic.

During one of these meetings, attended by Ketsa in person, Bay Mile, Josic, Stoil Slavov, and other individuals from SIC have discussed how to collect money to make Borisov a key figure at the Interior Ministry by buying him a post and a rank.

Before becoming Prime Minister after the summer 2009 general elections, Borisov was Mayor of Sofia and before that – Chief Secretary of the Interior Ministry (editor's note).

Vasil Kostov also told the magistrates that all permits for Bay Mile's security have been issued to the company IPON-1 Ltd, owned by Borisov at the time.

On Friday, the magistrates warned Ketsa that this testimony did not have anything to do with "The Killer's" trial, but the defendant managed to add that Borisov had been in charge of the illegal drug trafficking channel from Turkey to Bulgaria, and threw several more names of notorious Bulgarian crime bosses from the recent past, such as Konstantin Dimitrov, aka Kosyo Samokovetsa and Meto Ilieneski, who, he alleged, also had ties with Borisov.

It is also known that in the past Borisov had a joint business with another notorious SIC boss – Rumen Nikolov AKA Pashata.

In a diplomatic cable of the US embassy in Sofia, dated May 5, 2006, revealed on WikiLeaks and provided to the project for investigative journalism www.bivol.bg, former American Ambassador, John Beyrle, focusing on Borisov's biography and rise to power, wrote the following:

Accusations in years past have linked Borisov to oil-siphoning scandals, illegal deals involving LUKoil and major traffic in methamphetamines.

In the beginning of April 2009, Sreten Josic made headlines in Bulgaria, telling a Belgrade court he enjoyed the protection of high-ranking officials here, citing among others the name of the then Interior Chief Secretary and now Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov.

It would be a nice read, if it was not true. The whole rise to power of this mobster is a vivid example about media's decisive role in mass misinformation and heroic portrayal of a common criminal.

Look at the positive side. The "system" has caught up with this character. Pretty good for a country that has freed itself only recently from a communist dictatorship. Congratulations! In time the voters will also learn how to take on responsibility for themselves instead of blaming the media or others for the problems at hand.

No idea what you mean with "system" has caught up, but the most recent elections were the most flawed since the fall of the communism. The media misinformation was so radical, that it left no chance for any truth to come to life. I see no point in your words "In time the voters will also learn how to take on responsibility for themselves instead of blaming the media", since the voters were mainly ignored. The media is to blame, as it was in the time of the communist rule, as it achieved the same - total coverage and overexposure of the "achievements" of the government. The paid vote of the gypsies complemented that, and the especial slow proceedings at the voting points made it even more difficult for the normal people.
I can't presume responsibility for the vote of others than me, and no change can be made, except investigating a monopoly over nation's major media, but that's not my area of expertise again.
A much quicker solution would be to make an IQ test for voters and deny voting right for the ones, who are stupid enough to believe what the news tell them, but that seems unacceptable in a "democratic" society.

Since it's a photography website, here is a photo of two of Borisov's men caring a bag of voting tickets to the Elections Comity's hall:

Stanislav Ivanov, Member of the Parliament, from Borisov's party was not allowed to be there, but vote tempering accusations were not investigated at all.

it not about blaming media... media is a tool like a gun or cannon , but much more powerful

who controls it and toward what ends is the question

Correct me if I am wrong but I understand that Bulgarians have unrestricted access to the internet. If things are getting so bad, what about a "Bulgarian Spring"?

The good news: Due to the reputation of corruption, inefficiency and pathetic economic performance Bulgaria has not been blessed with massive loans from the EU. As a result they are not expected to suffer the kind of problems that Greece, Italy and many other EU nations are dealing with.

Nobody restricts free speech formally. Guess what happens fe facto:

In the morning of Thursday, 10 February, around 5 a.m., a bomb exploded in front of the building of the editorial office of Galeria newspaper in Sofia. ... In the last weeks the newspaper revealed series of wiretapped conversations between the PM Boiko Borissov, the financial minister Simeon Djankov and the director on the customs agency Vanio Tanov Those conversations are the hottest topic in the Bulgarian media recently.

Two Bulgarian journalists have been targeted in a series of worrying attacks.
A bomb blast destroyed a car belonging to TV host Sasho Dikov, the director of private television channel Kanal 3, outside his home in Sofia. It appeared to be a murder attempt.

Correct. Pensions in Greece, larger than EUR2000, will be reduced by 20% as a result of the "drastic" cuts. My grandmother gets EUR50 per month. Where's the good news?

Indeed. In short - in a massive media coverage and misinformation (90% of the media being owned by one man, formally an opponent, but de facto a strong supporter), the close-to-fascist party of the mobster Borisov falsified the elections, and pressurizes the inconvenient. The latest rumors (rather unpublicized witness testimonies etc.) are that the Police, tax administration and court will be used to force a lot of businesses into bankruptcy, clearing the field for the "friends" and acquiring a lot of property under market value.

I was in Sofia late 2009 and also drove around the country down through Rodopies, Rhodopes or however you'd like to spell them. I found village elders some of the most approachable and gentle people I've ever come across. I was making my way towards Madzharovo to photograph was is arguably one of the best places in Europe for photographing raptors but got a little side tracked by the central plain.

I'd definitely go back whatever is happening in their Government. Being able to walk around recently de-commissioned cold war air fields and army instillations without a fence to climb let alone security is completely alien to us Northern Europeans. Bulgaria might be crooked but enjoy the freedom them crooks are giving you before a government hell bent on restricting your freedom gets in power, which is something us Northern Europeans have had to endure for generations.

it is no different in america , where a creeping fascism  and a long slow dive towards third world citizen status and crap currency  is agenda driven and never mentioned in the media
daddy bush [ not the gay one ] was candid and quite serious when he said:

“If the American people really knew what we had done, we would be chased down the street and lynched.” — President George H.W.Bush to White House correspondent Sara McClendon, 1992

at least in bulgaria  the courts can expose this corruption an bring the participants to justice, the criminal political class in america is completely safe from that , when political sacrifices an the american altar do occur it is more likely a purge or a punishment for not playing by the  corporatocracies   ....er....."rules"
