Video tips.
« on: March 16, 2011, 04:19:22 PM »
So, I've never really shot video and will be using the E-P1 at a upcoming mountain bike race I'll be working at next month.  Any tips for getting nice smooth video?  I've thought about making that cheap steady-cam I found online and making it look nice.  I'll only be shooting video on the PEN and I might use my 40d to do some time lapse stuff.

Also, some of the time-lapse stuff I see has motion involved.  Is there some nice DIY motion control thing I can make?

A tripod is probably a good idea.

Yeah, but I'm not going to be in a static position while filming video.

I think I'm getting way to ahead of myself on video.  I have a friend that does alot of DSLR video, whom I should prob sit down and talk with. heh.

A good technique is to stake out certain areas to move to, and then take videos with the camera on the tripod as the bikers go past those places, and then rush to the next one. I'm not sure video of mountain bike races can be done any other way, but I don't have much experience with this.

Most sports and action stuff begs for long-lenses (unless you are hanging off the back of a motorcycle tour-de-france style so close that the riders can spit on you)

Shooting telephoto video off the tripod is a low percentage game, and logically. . .because you really can't arrange reshoots of sporting events . . .a tripod might be a good idea.

I've used a heavy gitzo monopod shooting video with the Olympus 50-200 on the GH1 and it was actually a moderately successful setup. Adding slo-mo in post sometimes helps.

I can imagine setting up on some corners of a fixed course and getting good low angle/wide angle shots of riders as they pass, but you will probably need something else in the way of angles to edit against.

Don't use an E-P1, my experience of shooting video with mine was like trying to drown an elephant with a water pistol....it's hopelessly inadequate for anything other than a slow circle around a birthday cake.
