More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

interesting read.

I found the most interesting bit about the comparison to the hacked GH1. I only hope there is enough interest in the GH2 to inspire a magic-lanternish hack.

But it seriously looks to me as if the $4795 Panasonic AG-AF100 is going to take a lot of wind out of the HDSLR sail.

The whole HDSLR phenom is on hold for most people. . .all the crap you have to hang on a 5d or such generally adds up to close to or more than the purchase price of the Af100. Audio was always the weak link. For those of us who already own our own lenses and microphones being able to buy a camera that you can just charge the batts, plug-in and go to work with is a huge comfort level thing.

I would expect answers from the usual suspects (Sony and Canon) to the sub $5k AF100. Probably a more pro oriented version of the Nex camcorder with TC and SDI? Maybe the next version of the Canon XL with an APSc sensor and an Eos mount?

Everyone in video-land is gaga over the AF100, everyone recognizes it as a giant-killer with a few exceptions from the folks doing vfx.

what I meant was that the canon takes 4k footage, but apparently (not sure) it uses a tiny sensor and not an aps c.

Haven't heard a thing about it, any links?

you were right, this was based on a review by crews.tv

With the release of the Nikon D90 and the Canon 5D MarkII (over two years ago) the age of the VDSLR (DSLR with video cameras) began. But according to the director Frank Glencairn that age is already past: “Okay, this is it. VDSLR is dead. It was cool, it was fun, it was great but it was also a major pain in the ass. It´s over. Panasonic came out with the AF100  at IBC and then there is Sony and the Scarlet soon. We finally come back to real camcorders, without moire and all the other problems to deal with. Sorry Zacuto.”

Panasonic is about to release the very first professional (bye bye Sony NEX-VG10), useable (bye bye Canon 5D) and cheap (bye bye RED) big sensor videocamera. I am one those guys that shot documentaries and I really like that camera. That’s why my production company preordered the AG-AF100 (at BHphoto). It’s great news for the Micro Four Thirds folks (even if you don’t care about video). I hope the success of that camera will push Olympus-Panasonic and other third party lens makers to delivers us new lenses!

HDSLRs are still awfully handy. Having both an AF100 and something like a GH2 gives you a lot of options and the crazy thing is that (in theory) they will both turn out the same quality image given the same lens.

I'm still blown away with the results I get from the GH1 when I put them side-to-side with big camera footage.
