Exciting stuff for video nerds!
« on: September 15, 2011, 06:32:54 PM »
A while back tamoio wrote me in a thread that avchd 2.0 didnt really offer that much of a leap. That going from 24Mbps (limit) to 28Mbps (limit) isnt actually noticeable. He's right. Well, it almost seems as if panny listened, and they announced their intentions to use AVC long G . it still falls under the AVCHD 2.0 standard as it doesnt really go over 25Mbps (for consumer stuff, its actually better than AVC intra, and goes all the way to 200Mbps), BUT, and its a big but...it does 4-2-2 color. In 10 bits. No external recorders required. Its based on the H.264 codec. Going from 4-2-0 8bits to 4-2-2 10 bits is like changing the stills quality setting on your camera from low to ultra fine (RAW being 4-4-4 12 bits). Much much much more smoother gradations, color accuracy and apparent color dynamic range. Unlike AVC intra, panny is fully intending to put AVC long G (ultra) on consumer products like the AF200. Not so sure on the GH3 but well see, at 25Mbps it may well be... At any rate, itll blow sonys recently anounced VG20 and FS out of the water easy.Heres a chessy video that was completely overlooked in the web.

Panasonic AVC Ultra

I warned you it was cheesy!

The thing that I completely do not understand is how my AF100 can shoot 1080 60P within AVCHD. I use the over crank frame rate feature a lot, its something that really sets this camera apart from any other in its price category. One of these days when I get the time I will do the necessary reading but probably by the time I understand it Panasonic will be using something different.

how is that possible? Isn't avchd limited to 1080i? Some sort of de-interlacing?
Did you see the zacuto shootout? Lots of arri alexas and f35 users impressed with the sheer resolution of the AF100.
who would have thought a test chart shot could be beautiful? best comment ever...

I'm being draged more and more into video. I'm actually considering a 16 gb RAM, 3gb sddr3 video card, 4 ghz i7 video editing monster with adobe premier... Somebody stop me!

. . .so to answer my own post: When you shoot 1080 60p on the AF100 the data rate is actually 35mbps! But it is outside of any broadcast standard and will only playback over HDMI or HDSDI at 24 or 30p. But if you import the 60p clip into a 24 or 30p PP CS5 project you get very (very) high quality slo-mo. I've been shooting all my wildlife stuff for the past 2 weeks at 48 to 60p. No exposure compensation required (now thats a film artifact)!

I learned this by permanently installing a copy of Barry Green's AF100 book in my bathroom.

Then you probably know about the student versions of Creative Suite, I think they are all around $600 which is a heckuva bargain.

I think I can also get a discount for pro services. Thanks for the heads up.

Dude, are you reading the other posts? I have been replying you! How are you doing 1080p on avchd? Deinterlacing? isn't avchd limited to 1080i?

Manufacturers seem to be implementing the AVCHD codec in unseemly ways-the old "wrapper" routine, I'm not sure how Panasonic is doing it but  1080 24p and 30p are acquisition frame-rate choices in the AF100, in fact there is a frame-rate wheel at the back of the camera and you can choose progressive frame rates in even numbers from 24 up to 60. 30P is very popular, but no audio recording at anything over 30. They are all .mts files on the cards, they import into PP as avchd files.

In fact 24 and 30p were frame rate choices on my previous Sony AVCHD cam, so it is nothing new. I will dig into how its actually done and get back on this.

Im having trouble with 24p on the GH2, its sorta skips a frame every 2:30 minutes, not particularly noticeable in regular viewing conditions but its there.

im on borrowed gear (not for long), Im using final cut pro 7 using a plugin to deal with AVCHD. The thing is, even when playing the file directly from the card on the monitor the skip is there. on every file.

BTW, its 2011, the fact that not even final cut x cannot deal with AVCHD is unforgivable

One of the reasons I went to CS5 on Win7 was that I knew I was going to be shooting a pile of AVCHD and I could never get it to function in FCP without a transcode step. That was almost 18 months ago. Apple really dropped the ball on the AVCHD thing. There is supposed to be an app/plugin called "clipwrap" that is faster than transcoding.

It does sound to me like a FCP playback problem. Send me 10s AVCHD 24p of your cat or something and I will tell you how it plays on CS5.

Ill find out thursday, a shiny alienware m18x will come in the mail and Im 100% sure ill go CS5 to use in combination with a wide gamut display that hasnt been getting much attention. If the problem persist ill surely send you the clip. Heres hoping and crossing fingers it has nothing to do with the GH2 (pleeeease no, say it aint so >:()

can I change RAM use on premiere cs5 under the preferences tab? I upgraded this thing to 32 GBs of RAM and want to be able to use at least 85% of that during editing. Im in the process of overclocking the thing but dont really want to unless I get some sort of fan control.

Yes:

Edit> Preferences> Memory

It is almost the same in Photoshop CS5:

Open the app, Edit> Preferences> Performance

I upgraded this thing to 32 GBs of RAM and want to be able to use at least 85% of that during editing. Im in the process of overclocking the thing but dont really want to unless I get some sort of fan control.

32gb  :o

I'm still using 16gb. But my understanding from the discussions over in the Adobe forum are that RAM over 16 isn't a significant performance boost compared to higher-ticket video cards.

The four things you absolutely need to cut AVCHD native in PP CS5/5.5 are:

Win 7 64b
14gb+ RAM
a supported Nvidia video card with all the RAM it can handle
enable the cuda drivers (which basically turns on the Mercury Playback Engine)

You really don't need RAID, I've been just using 7200 rpm SATA drives, actually AVCHD will even run over a USB portable drive.

RAID is essential if you are using AVID MC or FCP and editing HD in ProRes or DNxHD codecs that those systems use. The space and speed requirements are much higher. If I do any upgrades this winter its going to be an Nvidia Quadra card and a RAID controller (in the off-chance that sometime in future I will use an outboard  recorder on the AF100). For AVCHD RAID is mostly for redundancy, but I'm well backed-up already.
