Thanks - this isn't an HDR shot, though. (A few in the bigger thread in the landscape forum are, though.) just one exposure here. :)

Ok...the secret to my success:

Here is the original shot straight from RAW with no adjustments whatsoever in Lightroom:


I then pulled the highlights and recovered shadow detail, then illuminated shadow detail by developing the RAW in Lightroom using 87 recovery, 0 blacks (to recover shadow detail) and 41 Fill light.  This yielded the following base file for the B&W conversion (and is pretty close to what it actually looked like):


I then converted to B&W using Nik Silver Efex Pro 2, with a modified version of the "Full Contrast and Structure" preset.  I darkened it from the preset a bit, increased structure a little further, and then applied a light rectangular vignette which burned the clouds and the sand at the bottom to get the final look, which I'll show again below, just to make it easier to view between the three images.  :)

you started with a good exposure it had highlight and shadow to work with ...nicely done , thanks for the tutorial
