Curves and Lines in a Fountain in Winter
« on: February 05, 2012, 04:32:08 PM »
Two from today with my GX1 and Olympus 12mm f/2.  As you may know from another post, I just got this lens, and mine unfortunately has a pretty severely skewed element.  I've got a replacement coming Wednesday.  Good news is, for these, it worked well...it's acting like a tilt shift, and the wedge of focus goes near to far from left to right (or, in the case of these, from bottom to top.  So, I actually got a little deeper focus than I would have otherwise been able to do with a properly working lens.  Good news is, I've found that I will really like this lens when I get a non-broken one.  It's beautifully constructed, tiny, focuses quickly and is darn sharp (obviously now, not generally across the frame on mine, but I can see where it will be good).

In the first photo, where you placed the curve makes it feel like the loop is pulling the picture in.  Creates nice tension despite organic curves.  Do you know the name of the artist that did the fountain?

Not sure who designed them...

You can see the fountains in the changing images in the top bar here: http://www.sciotomile.com/

As I said, in this type of shot, it works great, because it's like a tilt shift slightly tilted to get more depth of field.  However, if I shoot a flat field subject, where everything is the same distance (where it SHOULD be best), the left side is horribly out of focus if I focused with the point in the center or the right.  If I focused with the left, then it's sharp, but the right two thirds of the image goes soft.

These are excellent. Cool, too, that you decided to shoot with the lens despite its flaw.
