2011 was the year I got into B&W
« on: January 09, 2012, 03:54:26 AM »
I did some B&W (film) shooting when I was in high school, but since I got interested in photography for real a few years ago, it's all been color. Until sometime in mid 2011, when for some reason B&W started looking interesting to me again. Now I find myself wanting to make all my shots B&W, although I often give in and realize that some shots just look better in color.

Anyway, here's some of the 2011 crop:

Don't get me wrong, I love B&W, but I do worry about it being a crutch for myself.  I also find myself wondering what some B&W photos would have been like in color.  I do, however, only wonder that about the #73 photo in this set.

I especially like the low-contrast portraits.

P.S.:  Not asking you to post #73 as a color photo.  I like mysteries too.

Amazing shots! I like your B&W, it makes the viewer concentrate on the subject, rather than get distracted by colourful backgrounds....

Funnily enough, that one had very little color to begin with. Converting it to B&W had a similar effect to what turning up the saturation would have on a very colorful photo, it just gave it more pop. IIRC, the only thing that had any color was the little sign. I think it was blue.

Great series !!

I'm still searching for a good b&w conversion-preset.

You obviously found a good way to do it !
Well done !

Did you use the same preset for all these pictures ?

Thanks :)

I used my "Film" preset on some of them (you can probably see which ones), but I haven't used any particular B&W conversion preset. But I usually play around with raising the Blacks, Fill and Clarity quite a bit to make them pop.

that cat shot is something else man...

Thanks! Honestly, with a subject like that it's hard to fail.
